SALT LAKE CITY - Junior wing Will Clyburn came up one rebound short of recording a double-double for the second time this season as the University of Utah men's basketball team earned a 76-63 victory over Fresno State Tuesday in a non-conference game at the Jon M. Huntsman Center.
Utah (4-2) held a 48-33 edge in rebounds over Fresno State (1-4). The Utes grabbed 20 offensive rebounds, which was the most under head coach Jim Boylen. Utah also held a commanding 34-14 advantage in points in the paint and grabbed a season-high eight steals. With the win, the Utes improved to 4-1 at the Huntsman Center this season.
Clyburn scored a game-high 21 points and has pulled down nine rebounds, also a game-high. Clyburn has led the team in scoring in each of the first six games this season and he has scored 20 or more points in four games. He has now posted back-to-back 20-point games on two instances this season. The Detroit, Mich., native set a career high with four 3-pointers on seven attempts.
Chris Kupets scored a career-high 17 points after a 5-of-9 effort from the field to go along with a 7-of-8 night from the free throw line.
Josh Watkins poured in 16 points and had a pair of steals. Kupets and Chris Hines, who made his first career start, each came up with a pair of steals as well.
Junior center David Foster recorded one block and now has 136 over his career for third place in school history. He is now 22 away from breaking Mitch Smith's (1985-89) second-place mark of 157. He also established a new season high with six rebounds.
Jason Washburn scored 10 points, off a 3-of-5 effort from the field and a 4-for-4 mark from the free throw line. Washburn also tied his career with eight rebounds.
The Utes improved to 4-0 when four players reach double-figures in points.
Utah missed its first six field goal attempts before a Clyburn three-pointer broke the Utes' 3:36 opening drought. The Utes trailed 9-5 before a 7-2 run that included Clyburn's second 3-pointer of the contest gave the Utes their first lead of the contest, 12-11. The third tie of the half came at 16-16 then Clyburn's third 3-pointer of the half, a lay-in by Watkins, and a dunk by Foster spurred a 7-0 run that gave Utah a 23-16 edge. Utah's defense held Fresno State without a field for over seven minutes (9:44 to 2:33) while the Utes extended their lead to nine points (27-18). Utah would end the half with its largest lead, 33-22.
The Ute defense held Fresno State to 28.0% shooting (7-of-25) in the opening half. Clyburn led the way offensively with 13 points, including a 3-for-5 effort from 3-point territory. Watkins followed with eight points and Washburn added six. The Utes gained a 28-21 rebounding advantage for the half after out-rebounding the Bulldogs 8-1 over the final 8:53 of play.
The Utes scored 16 of the first 19 points to start the second half and would lead by as many as 24 points (55-31). Utah's quick start to the second half included a 7-of-14 (50.0%) effort from the floor. The Utes controlled the remainder of the game as it went on to a 74-63 victory.
Fresno State was led by Bennie Rhodes' 15-point, five-rebound effort. Bracken Funk scored 11 and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds. Kevin Olekaibe poured in 13 points.
Utah hits the road for a MVC/MWC Challenge at Bradley on Saturday. Tipoff in Peoria, Ill., is set for 6:05 p.m. MT.
