SALT LAKE CITY - Utah swimming and diving is preparing for Mountain West Conference Championships by catching up on their rest before traveling to Oklahoma City on Monday.
"We are resting a lot this week," explained Utah Head Coach Greg Winslow. "Normally we train 20 hours a week with practices starting at 6 a.m., but we decided to let everyone get some extra sleep and cut back on practices. Right now, we are focusing on refining our skills, turns and breakouts and increasing our speed as much as we can."
Last year, the Ute women placed fourth with 469 points behind Wyoming (483), UNLV (586) and in-state rival BYU (643). The Utah men finished sixth with a total of 326 behind TCU (401), BYU (540), Wyoming (551), Air Force (614) and UNLV (888).
"I am really excited for our seniors this year. They have been a fun group to work with and they have been through all of this before and know what to expect," said Winslow. "John Baque is really coming into his own and I think that he is ready to go. Beth Gunderson and Annie VanLeeuwen are also performing well in the water right now."
During last year's competition, Baque (Olympia, Wash.) finished fourth in the 200 breast with a time of 1:59.20, setting a new Utah school record in the event and a new career-best. Baque also placed sixth in the 100 breast at 55.49.
"This is the one focus we have all year long and in our sport, duel meets don't mean as much," stated Winslow. "We plan on going into the conference meet with all we have and swimming as fast as we can."
The Ute women ended regular season with an overall record of 7-6 and 4-4 in MWC, while the Utah men closed the season 3-5 overall and 1-4 in MWC.
The MWC Championships will take place Feb. 24 - 26.
