OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - After the first day of the Mountain West Conference Swimming and Diving Championships, the Ute women are in fourth place with 74 points. The Ute men end the day in sixth place with a score of 60.
On the boards, Ellis Walters (Indianapolis, Ind.) placed third in the 1-meter dive with a `A' final score of 303.75, only 4.25 points behind BYU's Ava Jackman. Utah's Kwan Ling Yu (Yuen Long, Hong Kong) finished in 13th with a `B' final score of 261.
"We are really happy with how things turned out today," said Utah Head Coach Greg Winslow. "Ellis did a great job today and we are excited to continue swimming tomorrow."
Utah women, Hannah Caron (Raleigh, N.C.), Natalie Edge (South Jordan, Utah), Kristina Evans (Salt Lake City, Utah) and Annie VanLeeuwen (West Valley City, Utah), pulled together to take a fourth-place position in the 800 free relay with a final time of 7:23.98, while the men finished fifth in the event.
The men's relay team included Eric Murray (Woodstock, Ga.), David Pursley (Edmonton, Canada), Bryan Michaels (Shoreline, Wash.) and Ryan Hansen (Pewaukee, Wis.).
BYU currently leads all teams in points on both the men and women's sides with Wyoming holding on to second-place positions. The Cougar women ended the day with 133 points with the Cowgirls trailing behind with a score of 109. The BYU men secured the lead spot for the day with 125 points followed by Wyoming (94), UNLV (80), TCU (79), Air Force (71) and Utah (60).
Competition will resume all day tomorrow in Oklahoma City.
