NOTRE DAME, Ind. - The University of Utah women's track and field team sent their distance medley relay team to the Alex Wilson Invitational as a last chance to qualify for the 2010 NCAA Indoor National Championships. The Utes finished fifth overall with a provisional qualifying time of 11:13.77.
"It was unbelievable," said head coach Kyle Kepler. "They ran almost perfectly. The kids had a mission and they did what they needed to do in the race. Each kid set a new personal record for their split. It was a lot of fun to be a part of and it gives us a great chance to qualify for nationals."
Freshman Amanda Mergaert ran the first leg (1200m) in 3:27 to get the Utes into second place. She handed off to freshman Alyssa Johnson for the 400m leg. Johnson was in the top five of the pack with her split of 54.08 before handing off to sophomore Lucy Yates. She ran the 800m leg with a time of 2:06.08 to get the Utes back into second place. Junior Alyssa Abbott finished the race for Utah with the 1600m leg with a split of 4:44. The Utes finished fifth overall with a combined time of 11:13.77. Their time is currently 12th in the country and first in Utah school history.
"They did everything you could ever ask for and they just keep getting better," said Kepler. "Now we play the wait game to see if we will get into the national meet."
The selection for the 2010 NCAA Indoor National Championships will be made early next week. The meet will take place on March 10-13 in Fayetteville, Ark.
The Utes broke Utah's school record in the DMR last week at the Mountain West Conference Championships when they won the event with a time of 11:28.41. It was the first time in MWC history for a Utah team to claim the title. Their time was ranked 31st in the country this past week.
