AUSTIN, Texas - Sophomore Lucy Yates qualified for the NCAA Semifinals in the 800-meter run after taking third place in the first heat while representing the University of Utah track & field team Friday at the NCAA West Preliminary Friday at the Mike A. Myers Track & Soccer Stadium.
The St. Albans, Hertfordshire, U.K., native placed ninth overall, crossing the finish line in 2:07.34.
"We're very excited," Utah head coach Kyle Kepler said. "This is Lucy's first time qualifying for the national championships. She's moved onto the semifinals and gets to go to Eugene, Ore., to compete in the final 24. She ran another great race. She had to really push with 200 meters to go and was able to hang on for that the third spot in the heat, an automatic qualifying spot."
Yates finished as the runner-up after yesterday's first round race with a school-record time of 2:06.21 that beat her previous personal best by one second.
"It's just really exciting since she's a sophomore," Kepler said. "She's running her best and that's what we want her to do at this time of the year. Hopefully, we'll get a few more to join her tomorrow."
Four different Utes will compete in three different events tomorrow during the final day of the NCAA Preliminaries.
Utah senior Alyssa Abbott ended yesterday's first round by taking third place in her heat and 12th overall in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:24.43. The quarterfinal round is set for 6:45 p.m. CT.
Sarah Grimm enters the hammer throw competition in the No. 4 position with a distance of 63.14m. Freshman Anneli Stahl will also compete. The event will begin at 3 p.m. CT.
Sophomore Langley Iverson is 21st in the high jump with a personal-best 1.76-meter performance that took third at the MWC Championships. The high jump event will start at 4 p.m. CT.
The top three from each quarterfinal heat plus the next three performers advance to the NCAA National Championships in Eugene, Ore.
