AUSTIN, Texas - Four different Utes competed in three events for the University of Utah track & field team Saturday at the NCAA West Preliminary Saturday at the Mike A. Myers Track & Soccer Stadium.
"It was a tough day," Utah head coach Kyle Kepler said. "Obviously, we had high expectations but we just weren't able to meet them. It wasn't because we didn't try hard or give great effort, but it just wasn't our day. The kids didn't make any excuses but things just didn't go our way.
Alyssa Abbott took ninth place in her heat and 16th place overall in the 1,500-meter quarterfinals, crossing the finish line in 4:26.30.
"Alyssa was in the mix for the first 850 meters but when the group went she just didn't have anything there," Kepler said. "She still finished 16th overall for the meet, which was nine spots higher than what she was ranked coming into the meet. But I know she's disappointed because she wanted to go to Eugene."
Sarah Grimm had a first-round best throw of 183-6 (55.94m) for 20th place in the hammer throw but unfortunately failed to qualify for the quarterfinal flight.
"Sarah was relaxed and did everything she could, but again, things just didn't come together on the right day," Kepler said. "It's unfortunate and difficult for her as a senior but she has represented us so well as a conference champion and a national qualifier in the past. She had an amazing career and she'll be greatly missed, as will Chelsey Kaplar, the two seniors who made this meet."
Freshman Anneli Stahl also competed, throwing a consistent round that was highlighted by a 175-4 (53.44m) effort that earned 31st place.
"Anneli threw very well," Kepler said. "She handled the situation well and had one of her better throws of the year and had a great experience. For a freshman to compete in this meet is something we are very proud of. I'm happy she a good experience."
Sophomore Langley Iverson tied for 41st with a 5-4 (1.69m) height in the high jump.
"Right at the end of the warm-up there was a weather delay," Kepler said. "So they had to go inside for an hour and then come back out. She handled it well but just couldn't find a good rhythm. She struggled with her approach all day."
"We'll live to fight another day and keep the program moving forward," Kepler said. "We still have one athlete going to the national meet. Her teammates know that she competed at a high level and are very proud of her."
Lucy Yates advanced to the 800m semifinals at the NCAA National Championships in Eugene, Ore., June 9-13.
"Overall, we had a great year and we still have one more meet to go, at least from a collegiate standpoint," Kepler said. "Then we have kids who have qualified for the USA National meet so they'll come home and train so we'll keep things going. Believe it or not, we're still a month away from the season coming to an end."
