SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - Seniors Karolina Bartkowiak and Stephanie Neeley both notched double-doubles but the University of Utah volleyball team fell in a four-set decision Friday against Oklahoma (17-25, 25-23, 23-25, 18-25) in the opening match of the Dr. Mary Jo Wynn Invitational at the Hammons Student Center.
Bartkowiak had 15 kills and 13 digs for her second double-double this season and 13th of her career. The Aurora, Ill., native has had 10 or more kills in a match 39 times in her career and in five of seven matches this season. Bartkowiak has achieved the feat in digs three times this year and 18 times over her career.
Neeley turned in her 18th career double-double with 40 assists and a season-high-tying 15 digs. The Saugus, Calif., native has four double-doubles this season alone. She has amassed 10 or more digs 19 times over her career and four times in 2010. Neeley also had a season-high two kills.
Morgan Odale turned in double-digit-kill performance with 14 kills to go along with eight digs and a pair of blocks. Odale has hit for 10 or more kills in six of her first seven matches of her Utah career.
In the back row, senior libero Keisha Fisher tallied 22 digs for her sixth double-figure-dig match this year and the 66th of her career. The Ririe, Idaho native has hit double-figures in her last nine matches.
At the net, sophomore Miranda Bradshaw posted a team-high three blocks.
Utah (4-3) hit for a .147 mark in the match while Oklahoma hit for .208. The Utes were outblocked 10-6 at the net by the Sooners. Service aces few and far between with OU holding a slight 4-3 edge over the Utes, but Utah did gain a 76-71 advantage in digs.
With the first set tied at nine points apiece, Oklahoma put together a 6-1 run to assume a 15-10 advantage. The Sooners would extend their lead to as many as nine points (23-14) en route to a 25-17 first-set win.
Oklahoma held a 19-17 lead in the second set before the Utes took eight of the last 12 points to even the match at one set apiece with a 25-23 win. Bartkowiak had eight kills and six digs in the second set alone.
The third set played out in similar fashion and with the 10th tie of the set coming at 22-22, Oklahoma finished with a 3-1 spurt to seize a 25-23 victory. Utah was ahead 8-7 at the start of the fourth set but unfortunately would never lead again after Oklahoma put a 6-1 run together to assume 13-9 advantage. The margin would grow to as many as eight points as the Sooners earned a 25-18 win to clinch the match.
This was Utah's sixth four-set match out of a total of seven this season. The Utes are 3-3 in those contests.
Oklahoma (6-3) was led by a match-high 16 kills from Suzy Boulavsky and seven blocks from Sallie McLaurin, which also earned match-high honors.
Utah still owns a 2-1 edge in the all-time series against the Sooners.
The Utes will close Dr. Mary Jo Wynn Invitational play with a doubleheader tomorrow, starting against the host Missouri State Bears at 12 p.m. CT then against the St. Louis Billikens at 4:30 p.m. CT.
