SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - The University of Utah fell in a three-set decision to St. Louis (19-25, 18-25, 21-25) Saturday in its final match at the Dr. Mary Jo Wynn Invitational at the Hammons Student Center.
Utah (4-5) was outhit .294 to .219 in the match and outblocked 6-5. The Utes did hit a match-high .407 in the third set but unfortunately could not avoid the loss.
"We struggled with our block, our defense and getting kills all weekend," Utah head coach Beth Launiere. "We're passing and serving well but we're not stopping teams. Everything goes back to our blocking and defense. We just have to get better."
Libero Keisha Fisher and setter Stephanie Neeley had 10 digs apiece. Fisher now has 68 consecutive matches in which she has recorded 10 digs or more. Neeley has turned in three consecutive double-doubles after coordinating the Ute attack with 23 assists.
"We're passing the ball really well," Launiere said. "Keisha is playing great and [Karolina Bartkowiak] is passing really well. We're getting our opportunities offensively and we did a lot better executing our in-system offense."
Morgan Odale totaled 10 kills to go along with five digs and a block, while Brooke McAlister and Erin Redd both hit eight kills apiece. McAlister added four digs and a block, while Redd also came up with two blocks and a dig.
Karolina Bartkowiak and Danielle Killpack tied for match-high honors with three blocks apiece in the match.
"We just have to be in the right places at the right time with our block," Launiere said. "We've been able to adjust to teams once we get going but we're just not starting off very strong. It just takes experience to see the right things and get in the right places at the right time."
The first set was tied at five points before the Billikens went on an 11-2 run to take a 25-19 win. With SLU already ahead 9-6 in the second set, the Billikens put together a 5-1 spurt and would go on to take the set by seven points, 25-18. The third set was knotted at 17 points apiece but St. Louis was able to score five unanswered points to seize a 22-17 edge before clinching the match with a 25-21 win.
St. Louis (3-6) was led by a double-double performance from Megan Boken, who turned in a match-high 13 kills to go with 12 digs.
The Utes conclude their season-long road trip next weekend at the Arizona State Tournament in Phoenix, Ariz. Utah opens the event Friday against Pacific. First serve is set for 5 p.m. MT.
