SALT LAKE CITY - Kevin Sweeney, the University of Utah's head ski coach from 2000-05, has accepted an offer to return to the school in the same capacity. Sweeney, who led Utah to its most recent NCAA Ski Championship in 2003, spent a total of 12 years at the U. in his first term, including six years as an assistant coach from 1994-99.
The Utes experienced a great deal of national success under Sweeney. In addition to the 2003 NCAA Championship, the Utes captured one NCAA runner-up finish and two bronze medals. Sweeney coached 15 NCAA individual champions, 22 All-Americans and four Olympians. He also chaired the NCAA Skiing Rules Committee and was a member of the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association's Cross Country Skiing Committee while the head coach at Utah.
"It's an exciting opportunity on all fronts," Sweeney said of his appointment. "I thoroughly enjoyed my time at the U. before and I look forward to coming back and working with the student-athletes and coaches again.
"We really need to take advantage of the incomparable resources available to us at the U.," Sweeney continued. "The quality of education and facilities here are among the best in the world. My charge is to provide leadership and guidance, and make sure we're making good use of our resources."
"We are excited to have Kevin back as our Director of Skiing," said Utah Director of Athletics Dr. Chris Hill. "Kevin's teams performed exceptionally both academically and athletically when he was here before and we believe his experience, knowledge and proven track record in NCAA skiing will make us a contender for the championship once again."
Sweeney leaves a post as National Director of Competition for Swix to return to the U. He has remained a resident of Salt Lake City.
Sweeney skied collegiately for the University of New Hampshire, graduating cum laude in 1985 and represented the US in two domestic World Cup races.
