Utah Head Coach Jim Boylen
"The Y had a terrific night. They got 18 more shots than we did, made 11 more threes and then the turnover disparity...those are three things that made the difference in the game. You can't give an efficient offensive team 18 more shots. We beat them at the free throw line, we won that game and we won the rebound game. I thought we played hard and we tried. Their skill level and their ability to make shots overpowered us. I do feel that we are improving and that we did some good things. They were making threes on one end and we're missing layups. They were making threes on one end and we're missing pull ups. That's a frustrating scenario."
"There were a lot of bright spots for us. J.J. O'Brien is going to be a good basketball player in this program--he got his first double-double. David's starting to get back to his old self. Glover gets eight (rebounds) and 10 (points). All those guys are young, developing players in this program. I'm very disappointed, but I'm not discouraged. We all can see the glimpses of we can be, who we are, and who we are becoming. We ran into a very good team tonight that played well. You have to give them credit for that. "
"We have to pick ourselves up by our bootstraps and keep grinding. We'll take a day off tomorrow and we'll regroup, grow, and learn. I still believe we are close. There is no shame in losing a game--but it's very painful to lose to your rival on your home floor, we all know that. My job is to evaluate this group and keep them moving forward. We won the rebound game and the free throw game. We have to build on things like that. We have 13 league games left and then the tournament. We have a lot of basketball left. I'm going to keep teaching and working with them."
On committing 22 turnovers:
"We were a little tentative at times. Some of ours, I don't know if they were careless or if they were trying, how many of them were charges, or how many were deflected balls... I think it's safe to say those 14 turnovers from (Clyburn, Watkins, Kupets) aren't a good formula for winning a big game against a ranked team."
BYU Head Coach Dave Rose
"It was hard to get the ball to the basket and we ran in early to see if we could. Brandon was pretty successful here last year. We had to just find ways to get the ball in there and thank goodness too, because we were having a really hard time getting those shots."
"What I was really pleased with in the second half was our defense. Our zone really helped us and we were really active. We got to shoot the ball and rebounded the ball way better. Rebounding the ball allowed us to get out and get some scores in transition. We were able to turn them over some and get some steals and score. And I thought defensively we looked way better in the second half."
"I prefer the pace of games like this. We're comfortable, we have a lot of quick guys and have shortened our roster a little bit. I thought Jimmer gave us a really great lift. Our guys can run and if other teams want to run, then we try to run a lot of things."
