SALT LAKE CITY - The Ute ski team will hold the nordic portion of the University of Utah Invitational this weekend at the Soldier Hollow Resort, on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 21-22.
The freestyle races will be held on Friday beginning with the men's 10k at 9 a.m., and the women's 5k at 10:30 a.m. Saturday's action will feature the classical race with the women's 15k kicking things off at 9 a.m. MT., followed by the men's 20k at 10:30 a.m.
Utah stands in second place in the team standings of the Utah Invitational after earning 435 points in the alpine races held Jan. 8-9 in Park City. The Utes trail first-place Colorado by nine points.
"I anticipate racing at Soldier Hollow will be one of the most exciting stops on the RMISA tour," Utah Director of Skiing Kevin Sweeney said. "We will compete on the Olympic 5km course, which is a true test of stamina and technical ability. This race should be fun because teams are excited to have the season underway and it will be extremely competitive. We are in good shape and our main focus will be to rest well after the challenging contests the past few days in Montana."
In Utah's first nordic competition of the season last weekend at the Montana State Invitational, both Miles Havlick and Maria Grafnings put together solid weekends at the Bohart Ranch. They each earned Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Skiing Association Nordic Skier of the Week recognition for their performance.
Miles Havlick leads the Ute lineup in the men's nordic events. Havlick won the men's 20k classical race with a time of 58:37.4 on Sunday and he also turned in a podium performance on Saturday after finishing as the runner-up in the 10k freestyle race with a time of 24:25.6. Last season, he qualified for two events in the NCAA Championships as a freshman in 2010, earning All-America honors in the 10k classic with an eighth-place finish and also finishing 22nd in the 20k freestyle.
Last season, Rolf Figi qualified for the national meet and was an alternate due to team limits. Team captain Ian Havlick returns as will two-time NCAA qualifier Didrik Smith, who finished 12th in the 20-km freestyle and placed 17th in the 10k classic at last season's national meet. Junior Tom Smith registered six top-25 finishes last year, while Bend, Ore., native Charlie Smith looks to make an immediate impact.
Grafnings made a strong Ute debut by winning both races last weekend in Montana. She was the first to cross the finish line in the women's 15k classical race with a time of 48:23.3 and took home the 10k freestyle title with a time of 13:09.1. A pair of three-time NCAA qualifiers, Sarah MacCarthy and Zoe Roy, team with Rose Kemp, who was an NCAA qualifier in both the 5k and 15k freestyle last season, to form the focal point of Utah's women's nordic events. Parker Tyler, Madeleine Talkington, Marta Larsen, and Mali Noyes also compete in nordic events for the Utes.
