SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah ski team opens its 2011 campaign with the alpine portion of the Utah Invitational, held at Park City Mountain Resort, on Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 8-9.
The giant slalom events will be held on Saturday beginning with the first women's run at 9 a.m. MT. Sunday's action is the slalom with the men kicking things off at 9 a.m. MT.
"We are ready to go," Utah Director of Skiing Kevin Sweeney said. "I've been impressed all fall with the dedication this team has shown. Coming back into the fold, I feel [Head Alpine Coach] Jaka [Korencan] and [Assistant Alpine Coach] Will [McDonald] have the team ready for collegiate starts."
A talented and experienced trio of skiers returns for the Utes in the men's alpine events. Torjus Krogdahl was an All-American in both the slalom (second) and giant slalom (ninth) in 2010 and has qualified for the NCAA Championships in each of the last two years. Junior Nick Cohee returns to the squad after qualifying for the NCAA Championships in 2010.
Sophomore Ryan Wilson, who turned down an invitation to the 2009-10 US Ski Team to compete with the Utes, ran in four races for Utah last season before suffering a knee injury. Incoming freshmen Eian Sandvik and Jeremy Elliot both have polished pedigrees and are poised to have an immediate impact for the Utes.
The women's alpine team is led by five-time All-American and defending NCAA giant slalom champion Eva Huckova. Sofia Smith earned All-American honors in the giant slalom during the 2010 season and Ana Kocken placed third in the slalom at NCAA's last year.
Newcomer Ti Marie Romar joins the Utes from Mustasaari, Finland. Sophomore Julia Wong has successfully recovered from injury and will return to the roster this season, while local product Jaime Dupratt joins the team as well after competing with the Park City Ski Education Foundation.
"We are strong, injuries are minimal, and we are ready to compete," Sweeney said. "Hosting the RMISA opener on the Olympic venue is always exciting for us."
"It's very challenging terrain and we will have to be sharp. Competition will be quite intense this year so the most I can ask is that we inspect the courses well and minimize surprises, then just let it go like we do in training. This will give us a strong team result. We look forward to showcasing our returnees as well as our newcomers on the home hill."
