Utah Head Coach Kyle Whittingham
Opening statement:
"Turning the ball over five times against anyone can't work, especially against a quality opponent. In the first half, we also turned the ball over twice in the red zone. We were moving the ball well in the first half, but that doesn't matter much if you can't get the ball in the end zone. Again, it's going to be tough to beat anyone in the game with five turnovers. Taking care of the ball is job No. 1 as an offense.
"We started the game off with the worst possible scenario, fumbling the opening kickoff. But give Washington credit, they're a good football team. They made a bunch of plays and executed very well throughout the game. They didn't surprise us defensively. What we saw was similar to what we saw on the tape. We saw the same blitzes and coverages. We played well on defense in the first half, but couldn't finish. The second half was completely different. We'll have to go back and look at the film to find the issues we have to work on."
On quarterback Jordan Wynn:
"We lost our quarterback at the end of the first half with a left shoulder injury. I'm not sure about the exact diagnosis yet, but we'll know more tomorrow and a lot more on Monday. We found out he wouldn't be back in the game at halftime."
On quarterback Jon Hays:
"He was ready to step in and play. I'll have to look at the tape to really critique how he performed, but I know he was put into a tough situation against a pretty good defense. He did turn the ball over twice in the second half so there are definitely some issues we have to address. We did have to modify the offensive game plan with Jon in there, obviously. He has a strong arm, but is a little bit more of a runner than Jordan."
On the run game:
"I was surprised that we weren't able to run the ball tonight. There weren't any open holes so that's something we have look at on the film and find out what we can improve on and then focus on that in the future."
Utah quarterback Jon Hays
On the game:
"The second half was very disappointing. We couldn't move the ball as an offense and made some key mistakes. It starts with me so I take full responsibility. I just have to prepare better during the week and execute better when I have an opportunity."
Utah defensive lineman Derrick Shelby
On the game:
"It was very disappointing to end the game like that. In the first half, we did exactly what we wanted. We were stopping them consistently, but I don't know what happened in the second. We just didn't finish the game. I have no idea what adjustments Washington made, but we have to put this behind us and move on to Arizona State."
Utah offensive lineman John Cullen
On the start of the game:
"It was pretty much the opposite of the BYU game. It's hard to come back against a good team like this after giving them momentum. We had those potential scores in the red zone during the first half, but couldn't capitalize. We couldn't run the ball tonight and when you're behind, it's difficult to establish when trying to come back from a big deficit."
Washington Head Coach Steve Sarkisian
"The defense was the key to the game tonight. It got us through the first half until the offense could come around."
"The two turnovers in the first half were obviously huge for us."
"Our QB responded well in the second half and the offensive line and Chris Polk were dominant."
"This was a great game as we continue to learn who we are. This is a resilient group and we fed off the challenges tonight. We responded well."
"This is a good win for our program. We're now 2-0 in the North Division and it's a nice road victory."
