PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif.- Callie Craig of the University of Utah women's team notched a win over a top-75 ranked opponent Tuesday in the qualifying singles consolation bracket at the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships.
"It was a very good day despite the first round loss," said head coach Mat Iandolo. "Callie played great in her first match and then again in the back-draw. I like how things are shaping up. We have three players who could all be in the top-100 which is what we need to become a top-25 team."
In the first round of consolation play, Craig upset 72nd-ranked Hana Tomlijanovic of Virginia 6-4, 6-3. The Utah sophomore faces 20th-ranked Nazari Urbina of Texas A&M in the second round of consolation play.
Earlier in the day, Craig dropped a close 6-7(4), 6-4, 6-3, decision to Florida's 34th-ranked Alex Cercone in the first round of singles qualifying play.
In qualifying doubles play, Craig and sophomore partner Sarah Pham fell to Princeton's Hillary Bartlett and Lindsay Graff, 4-3, after being forced to retire due to an injury sustained by Pham.
