SALT LAKE CITY- The 59th-ranked University of Utah women's tennis team (11-8, 5-0 MWC) bested 72nd-ranked Wyoming (10-7, 0-4 MWC) Sunday to remain undefeated in Mountain West Conference play. After dropping the doubles point, the Utes won four consecutive singles matches for the 4-3 victory over the Cowgirls. Freshman Sarah Pham earned the match-clinching point, for the second day in a row, by topping Simona Synkova 6-1, 7-5, at the No. 4 singles spot.
"We had a good bounce back in singles today after a poor showing in doubles," said head coach Mat Iandolo. "I have to give Wyoming credit, they came out and played some really inspired doubles today. I felt like getting off to a hot start in singles went a long way towards neutralizing their momentum and turning the match in our favor. It's good to be 5-0 in Conference play heading into two pivotal matches in San Diego next weekend."
In doubles play, the freshmen duo of Pham and Lucia Kovarcikova saw their five-match winning streak snapped when they dropped an 8-4 decision to Veronica Popovici and Carly Van Hollen at the No. 3 spot. The team of senior Evgenia Kryuchkova and redshirt sophomore Lexi Provancha fell to Rebecca Berger and Alexandra Kovacs 8-3, at the No. 2 position, giving Wyoming the doubles point.
Junior Anastasia Putilina and sophomore Paige Miles defeated Synkova and Kim van Ginkel at the No. 1 spot, 8-5, extending their winning streak to four.
In singles play, 108th-ranked Kryuchkova, the MWC Women's Tennis Player of the Week, downed Kovacs, 6-1, 6-0, at the No. 2 position, evening the score at 1-1. The Utah senior is 5-0 against MWC opponents.
Miles extended her winning streak to six, with her 6-0, 6-3, defeat of Sa?a Nemcová at the No. 5 spot.
Putilina, ranked No. 82, topped Popovici at the No. 1 position, 6-4, 6-3, to give the Utes a 3-1 lead over the Cowgirls.
Pham then clinched the match at 4-1 from the No. 4 spot. The Utah freshman is on a six-match winning streak in singles.
Kovarcikova fell to van Ginkel at the No. 3 position, 6-3, 6-4, while Provancha dropped a 7-6, 0-6, 10-4, decision to Berger at the No. 6 spot, making the final score 4-3 in favor of the Utes.
Utah heads to San Diego, Calif., April 15-16, for a pair of MWC matches against 48th-ranked UNLV (April 15) and 45th-ranked San Diego State (April 16). Heading into today's (Sunday) matches the Utes, the Aztecs, and the Rebels were the only remaining undefeated teams in the MWC.
