EUGENE, Ore.- The University of Utah women's track and field team completed the first day at the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds with senior Alyssa Abbott and sophomore Amanda Mergaert qualifying for the final round in the 1500m race.
"Overall we ran pretty well today," said head coach Kyle Kepler. "Our goal is plain and simple, that is to survive and advance to the next round. These two (Abbott and Mergaert) both reached their goal and moved on."
In the 1500 race, Mergaert led the way with a time of 4:23.02 (second-best time of her career) which earned her eighth-place overall (third in her heat). In the final 80m of the race, Abbott was in seventh-place and made a final surge to finish in the top-five of her heat so that she could qualify for the final round. Abbott finished fifth in her heat (22nd overall) with a time of 4:24.54. Both athletes qualified and will compete in the final round on Saturday.
In the 800m, junior Lucy Yates posted a time of 2:09.39 which earned her 34th-place overall. Her time failed to qualify for the final round of the event.
"Lucy had a terrific season," stated Kepler. "It is unfortunate she did not make it to the final round, but we are proud of her effort."
Junior Brianna LeRoy hit the second-best mark of her career with a 19-4 in the women's long jump. LeRoy entered the day seeded 40th in the long jump and she ended the event in 21st place.
The NCAA West Preliminary Rounds continue Friday beginning with the women's hammer throw at 10 a.m. PST at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore.
