EUGENE, Ore. - The University of Utah women's track and field team continued action on the second day of the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds with sophomore Angela Kaplar in the 100m hurdles and sophomore Anneli Stahl in the hammer throw.
"We are happy that Kaplar and Stahl made it this far. Unfortunately they did not advance," said head coach Kyle Kepler. "They came out and competed hard in their events."
In her first career appearance at the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds, Kaplar competed in the 100m hurdles where she had a strong start through five hurdles. In the final half of the race, Kaplar seemed to tighten up and she finished seventh in her heat (42nd overall).
In the hammer throw, Stahl opened up the event with a first-throw of 175-0. In her final two attempts, she was unable to increase her mark and did not qualify for the final round. Stahl finished the event 34th overall.
On Saturday the Utes are scheduled to compete in the high jump and 1500m final round.
"Tomorrow is a big day for our program," stated Kepler. "We will have an opportunity to compete at the same site as the NCAA Championships. We need to focus on our goals and it will come down to who can control nerves, focus and relax."
The NCAA West Preliminary Rounds continue Saturday beginning with the women's high jump at 12:15 p.m. PST at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore.
