2012 University of Utah Skiing Schedule ![]()
SALT LAKE CITY - Fresh off a second-place finish at the 2011 NCAA Championships, the University of Utah ski team released its 2012 schedule Thursday. Meets hosted by Colorado University, Denver University and Alaska Anchorage await the Utes before the Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Skiing Association (RMISA) and NCAA Championships are hosted by Montana State.
The Utes begin their bid to contend for their 12th national title in 2012 with two meets in the state of Colorado. After an RMISA Giant Slalom Qualifying race on Jan. 6, the Colorado University Invitational will begin with alpine races on Jan.6-8 at Eldora Mountain Resort. Howelsen Hill in Steamboat Springs, Colo., will hold the nordic events on Jan. 13-14. The alpine portion of the Denver Invitational will start Jan.14-15 at the Winter Park Resort, followed by the nordic races at Devil's Thumb Ranch.
In Alaska, the Utes will compete in a pair of meets, the Alaska Anchorage Invitational and the Seawolf Invitational, from Feb. 4-11. The alpine competition will be held at Alyeska Resort in Girdwood while nordic races will be at Kincaid Park in Anchorage.
"We're not hosting a meet this year but that's because of the rotation we've been on for several years," Director of Skiing Kevin Sweeney said. "Now it's our turn to sit back and let another school host, but it's anticipated that we'll be back on the schedule to host for the next four years. We really want to support Alaska because they're the school that's traveling the farthest by coming down to the lower 48 states to compete. Their venues are excellent. Alyeska has hosted many alpine national championships as well as NCAA's. Kincaid Park has also hosted U.S. Nationals as well as NCAA's. It's quality racing and a good opportunity to support a fellow RMISA member."
After the RMISA Slalom Qualifier on Feb. 23, the NCAA West Regional and RMISA Championships will be held at Big Sky Resort (alpine) and Bohart Ranch (nordic) in Bozeman, Mont., Feb. 24-25. The season wraps up at the NCAA Championships in the same locations.
"It's great that the NCAA Championships will be in the west," Sweeney said. "We've skied well in Bozeman so that's exciting for us."
The Utes finished second at the 2011 NCAA Championships and will have five All-Americans returning to the squad for the 2012 season.
