ELDORA, Colo. - Both the men's and women's slalom races of the Spencer Nelson Memorial Invitational were postponed on Sunday due to course conditions at the Eldora Ski Resort as the University of Utah Alpine Ski Team wrapped up the first weekend of the 2012 season. The tentative plan is to run the slalom races Friday at the Winter Park Resort before the Denver Invitational.
Four to five inches of snow fell overnight in Eldora and did not pack well enough for racing.
"It was an interesting day in Eldora today: sunny, blue skies and extremely soft snow conditions," Utah Head Alpine Coach Jaka Korencan said. "Unfortunately, both races had to be cancelled due to very difficult and extremely dangerous snow conditions. I am sure we saved some broken bones and blown-out knees today. The Utes will move to Winter Park this afternoon to continue with FIS races there. This will be a great preparation for the DU Invitational next weekend, also in Winter Park. We are all looking forward to another great weekend in Colorado."
The Utes remain in second place in the Spencer Nelson Memorial Invitational team standings with 236 points, only three points behind leader Colorado.
"We all wished conditions were better so we could have raced, but we feel it was a good call because some unnecessary injuries would have been the result if the races were forced," Utah junior captain Anna Kocken said. "We are all looking forward to the next races on the schedule."
After the Spencer Nelson Memorial Invitational Slalom race next Friday in Winter Park, Colo., Utah's Alpine skiers will also compete in the DU Invitational next weekend in the same location. The giant slalom races will be held on Saturday, followed by the slalom events on Sunday.
The Utes will kick off the Nordic portion of the 2012 season at the Spencer Nelson Memorial Invitational next weekend in Steamboat Springs, Colo., at the Howelsen Hill Ski Resort. The 5/10k freestyle races are set for Friday then the 15/20k classical races will be held on Saturday.
