LAS VEGAS - The University of Utah women's tennis team continued the USTA/ITA Mountain Regional tournament Friday at the Fertitta Tennis Complex. Utah's third-seeded junior Sarah Pham and seventh-seeded sophomore Tereza Bekerova advanced to the singles quarterfinals after capturing two consecutive victories in the second and third rounds.
In the second round of singles competition, Pham netted a 6-4, 6-2 victory over BYU's Morgan Anderson. Bekerova then vanquised Morgan Basil of Boise State 6-0, 6-2, while fellow Ute 12th-seeded junior Elena Najera-Salas topped Tiffany Tran of Air Force, 6-4, 6-4.
In other second-round singles play, ninth-seeded junior Callie Craig suffered a hard fought 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 loss to Wyoming's Jessica Parizher. Sophomore Natasha Smith dropped a 5-7, 6-3, 6-1 decision to Sophie Bergner of Denver.
Pham continued in the third round of singles, besting Wyoming's Sasa Nemcova, 6-2, 6-3, while Bekerova outplayed Iren Kotseva of UNLV, 6-3, 6-3. Najera-Salas was unable to come up with a win to advance to the quarterfinals and fell to Idaho's Almundena Sanz, 6-4, 6-4.
Both Pham and Bekerova will take on opponents from Nevada Saturday at 12 p.m., in the semifinal round. Pham faces Michelle Okhremchuk as Bekerova takes on Emma Berberne. The championship round of the USTA/ITA Mountain Regionals will take place at 3:30 p.m., Saturday.
