Pham Advances to Singles Semifinals at Mountain Regionals

LAS VEGAS - The University of Utah women's tennis team tallied multiple victories Saturday at the USTA/ITA Mountain Regional Championships at the Fertitta Tennis Complex to advance to the semifinal rounds in singles and doubles competition.
In the singles round of 16, third-seeded junior Sarah Pham topped Nevada Reno's 13th-seeded Michelle Okhremchuk, 6-4, 7-5, as seventh-seeded sophomore Tereza Bekerova battled 16th-seeded Emma Verberne of Nevada Reno to a tight 7-5, 5-7, 6-2 victory.
The two Utes then advanced to the quarterfinal round, where Pham bested Boise State's 24th-seeded Sandy Vo, 6-4, 7-5. Bekerova was unable to capture a second win and fell to second-seeded No. 89 Aleksandra Josifoska of UNLV, 6-4, 7-5.
Pham returns to action Sunday at 12 p.m., in the semifinals to battle UNLV's first-seeded Lucia Batta for a spot in the championship round at 3 p.m.
In the round of 16 of doubles competition, 13th-seeded redshirt junior Paige Miles and Bekerova upset BYU's seventh-seeded Desiree Tran and Megan Sheehan-Dizon. Fourteenth-seeded Pham and sophomore Natasha Smith fell to Wyoming's first-seeded Veronica Popovici and Simona Synkova, 8-6.
Miles and Bekerova returned in the doubles quarterfinals to clinch an 8-2 victory over Jessica Parizher and Silviya Zhekyazkova of Wyoming. The pair returns Sunday at 9 a.m., in the doubles semifinals against UNLV's fourth-seeded Nives Pavlovic and Batta. If the Utes should prevail, the doubles finals will be played at 10:30 a.m.
In singles consolation play, Smith bested Denver's Mandy Van Der Eerenbeemt, 6-3, 6-4, while fellow Ute Callie Craig dropped a 7-5, 4-6, 1-0 (10-5) decision to Wyoming's Synkova.
