INDIANAPOLIS--The University of Utah's varsity athletes are graduating at a higher rate than the general population and 81-percent of them will graduate within six years from the time they enrolled as freshmen, according to federal and NCAA figures just released for 2011-12.
Based on the Federal Graduation Rate (FGR), 65-percent of the U.'s student-athletes, compared to 55-percent of the general student population, graduated within six years (with no accommodation made for transfers into or out of an institution).
The Utes fared even better based on the NCAA's Graduation Success Rate (GSR), which begins with the federal cohort, but does not penalize an institution for student-athletes who transfer to another school while in good academic standing.
According to the GSR, 81-percent of the student-athletes who enroll at Utah full-time and do not transfer or go on missions will graduate within six years.
Five Ute sports recorded perfect GSRs to rank first (or tied for first) in the Pac-12 Conference: men's and women's tennis, women's basketball, gymnastics and soccer. It marked the second straight year of 100-percent scores for the men's and women's tennis and gymnastics teams. The football and baseball teams' rates placed them third in the conference.
Nine sports, including all of the men's sports, improved their GSRs from last year. The biggest improvements came in women's basketball (+8%), men's basketball (+6%) and soccer (+6%).
Additionally, nine sports met or exceeded the overall Division I GSR for their sport: baseball, men's basketball, women's basketball, gymnastics, men's skiing, men's tennis, women's tennis soccer and volleyball.
