SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of Utah women's tennis team advanced two doubles pairs and junior Sarah Pham to the singles and doubles championship rounds at the SDSU Fall Classic Saturday at the Aztec Tennis Center.
In doubles play, junior Elena Najera-Salas and sophomore Natasha Smith captured an 8-6 victory over Washington's Julija Lukac and Andjela Nemcevic and will face Lacey Smyth and Kim Stubbe of Arizona Sunday in the black-flight doubles championship round.
Juniors Sarah Pham and Callie Craig teamed up in the red flight, besting Dylan Windom and Belen Ludeuena of Kansas. The duo will take on Edyta Cieplucha and Elena Fayner of Southern Methodist Sunday in the final round.
In singles play, junior Sarah Pham captured a 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 upset victory over Arizona's No. 72 Kim Stubbe to advance to the final round of the red flight and faces No. 34 Cieplucha Sunday. Junior Callie Craig suffered a hard-fought 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 loss to No. 25 Lacey Smyth of Arizona in the white flight.
In singles consolation play, sophomore Natasha Smith battled Fayner for a 7-6(1), 6-3 win and will take on Riko Shimizu of Washington Sunday in the grey-flight consolation final round. Also in the grey flight, junior Lucia Kovarcikova dropped a 7-6(4), 6-2 decision to Shimizu. Utah's Lexi Antista fell to Dora Somoracz of San Diego State in the gold flight.
