SAN DIEGO, Calif.- Following the second day of action at the Aztec Invitational, senior Brianna LeRoy captured the spotlight with a lifetime-best performance in the heptathlon.
"Brianna had a great day," Utah head coach Kyle Kepler said. "She got the outdoor season off to a great start. Overall this was a solid way to start. The first two days have gone well and we are very excited to compete in several invitational events tomorrow. We are excited to be here and the chance we have to be outdoors."
On Thursday, LeRoy started the day clocking a time of 14.63 in the 100m hurdles. The second event of the heptathlon featured LeRoy in the high jump earning a mark of 5-9.25 feet. In the shot put, LeRoy recorded a throw of 34-07 feet. The final event of day one was the 200m where LeRoy clocked a time of 26.54 seconds.
LeRoy entered competition on Friday in third place heading into the final three events.
To get the second day underway, LeRoy recorded a heptathlon long jump mark of 17-9.75 feet. Following the long jump, LeRoy set a new lifetime-best mark in the javelin with a throw of 137-00 feet, which ranks third all-time in school history. Rounding out the heptathlon, LeRoy clocked a 2:33.31 in the 800m to secure second place overall with a career-best performance of 5,168 points. LeRoy set the third highest points total in school history passing Meren Hatch's 5,150 point performance set in 1987.
The overall winner of the heptathlon was San Diego State's Allison Reaser with 5,475 points.
In the 200m, junior Stephanie Jolley crossed the line first for the Utes and sixth overall with a time of 24.79 seconds. Lauryn McKay was the second Utah runner to finish with a time of 25.21seconds claiming 15th place. Angela Kaplar finished 28th with a time of 26.31 seconds, respectively for the Utes.
Juniors Anneli Stahl and Nikkie Rudder represented the Utes in the hammer throw invitational. Stahl qualified for the final round and finished with a throw of 181-08 feet to earn fifth place. Rudder finished 11th with a mark of 159--09 for the Utes.
The team will get the final day underway on Saturday beginning at 9 a.m. PST with the javelin throw.
