TUCSON, Ariz. - The Utah Utes (12-11, 2-10) dropped a Pac-12 match to the No. 15 Arizona Wildcats (18-6, 7-5), falling in straight sets (19-25, 23-25, 14-25) Saturday evening at the McKale Center.
Back-to-back kills from senior Chelsey Schofield-Olsen helped Utah jump out to an early 4-2 lead in the first set and freshman Adora Anae later put the Utes up 6-3 with her kill to the back row. A pair of kills from senior Makenzie Moea'i pushed Utah's lead to 9-7, but the Wildcats came right back with two straight points to tie things up 9-9. Utah would keep the Arizona within just a couple of points before a 6-1 run gave the Wildcats a 22-16 lead. A 3-0 run from the Utes would pull Utah back within three points, but Arizona won the final three points to take the first set, 25-19.
The Wildcats went on a 4-0 run and led 5-3 before a block from Schofield-Olsen made it 5-4. Anae would tally three kills during Utah's 5-1 run and the Utes led 8-6 before another run of 4-1 forced the Wildcats to call a timeout, down 12-8. Arizona would rally back and tie the match 16-16 before Utah recovered with a pair of straight points to retake an 18-16 lead. The Wildcats countered though with a 5-1 run and led 21-19 when Utah called a timeout. The Utes would later go up 22-21 before both team traded points and Utah was forced to call a timeout, down set point, 24-23. Following a back-and-forth rally, the Wildcats came away with the win in the second set when Rachel Rhoades got the kill over senior Bailey Bateman's block.
Arizona opened the third set with a 6-1 run and later went on a 5-1 run to take a 12-5 lead. Utah scored three of the next five points, but another 5-1 run from the home team put the match out of read as Utah trailed 18-9. The Wildcats would go on to hit .367 in the third set en route to a 25-14 win.
Arizona sweeps the season series, winning both matches in straight sets, and the Wildcats have now won three straight over Utah dating back to the 2013 season.
Anae led the Utes with 11 kills on .455 hitting and Trueman added eight kills, while senior Lea Adolph added a match-high 21 digs on the night.
The Utes hit just .094 in the third set, but managed to finish the evening hitting .181 with 43 kills. The Wildcats had just eight attack errors in the match and finished hitting .296.
Arizona out-blocked Utah 9.0 to 4.0, collecting 15 total blocks to Utah's eight totabl blocks on the night.
The Utes will return home from its four-match road swing, hosting USC next Friday, Nov. 7, and UCLA next Sunday, Nov. 9. Friday's match will begin at 6 p.m. inside the Huntsman Center.
