SALT LAKE CITY - Utah senior Chelsey Schofield-Olsen tallied 12 kills and helped the Utes snap a 10-match losing streak to No. 19 USC, downing the Trojans in straights (25-17, 25-22, 26-24) Friday night at the Huntsman Center.
Playing in front of 1,493 fans - the fourth largest crowd to witness a volleyball game inside the Huntsman Center - the Utes (13-11, 3-10) also snapped a five-match losing streak on the season, while defeating the Trojans (13-10, 6-7 Pac-12) for just the second time in school history and the first time since 1986.
After both teams traded points to open the first set, Utah went on a 3-0 run to take a 9-6 lead, but USC came right back with a 4-0 run, which forced the Utes to call a timeout, down 10-9. Utah came out of the break with a 5-1 run and then followed with a 6-2 run to take a 20-13 lead, but USC came right back with three straight points and a 4-1 run would pull the Trojans back within four points, down 21-17. Utah closed out the set winning the final four points though as senior Shelby Dalton and redshirt freshman Carly Trueman blocked USC's Samantha Bricio's attack to give the Utes a 25-17 win in the first set.
Utah tallied 16 kills to USC's 10 in the first set and the Utes out-hit the Trojans .467 to .152.
Utah opened the second set with two straight points and later Schofield-Olsen would knock down back-to-back kills to push the Ute lead to 8-3. USC would then trade points with the Utes until a 3-0 run forced the Trojans to call a timeout, down 20-14. USC won five of next seven points, but Utah still managed to earn points when they needed them down the stretch en route to a 25-22 win in set two.
Heading into intermission, Utah had tallied 32 kills to USC's 24, a .403 hitting percentage to USC's .250 and four service aces to zero for the Trojans.
The Trojans scored three of the first four points in the third set before the Utes came back to trade the visitors point-for-point and then later tie the set 13-13 following a 5-2 run. USC would call a timeout and then go on a 4-1 run before Utah countered with a 7-4 run to tie the set at 21-21. The teams would then trade points until a kill from Dalton put the Utes up match-point and then senior Kalee Kirby tallied the match-winning kill.
The Utes hit a season-best .429 in the match, while five different players tallied at least seven kills in the match. Trueman had seven kills and hit a career-high .778 on the evening, while freshman Eliza Katoa tallied eight kills on .500 hitting.
Utah had 52 kills to USC's 38 and the setters accounted for 40 assists to USC's 38. Kirby finished the match as the only Utah player to record a double-double, finishing the match with 19 assists and 10 digs. Junior Kendall Cygan tallied a match-high 23 assists and needs just two more to move into Utah's all-time career leaders list. Meanwhile, Schofield-Olsen moved into fifth-place all-time in career kills as well.
The Utes will return to action this Sunday, hosting No. 15 UCLA. The Utes and Bruins are set to play at 2 p.m. inside the Huntsman Center.
