SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah women's tennis team announced the signing of three student-athletes to National Letters of Intent after national signing day last week. Margo Pletcher, Taylor Calton and Brianna Turley will join the Utes in 2015-16.
"I am very pleased with this recruiting class," said Utah head coach Mat Iandolo. "While the national recruiting services may not have it rated high, all three are capable of playing at a very high level. I am also very excited to have the best two high school players in the state coming to Utah."
Taylor Calton and Brianna Turley are both local products, while Margo Pletcher hails from Laguna Niguel, Calif.
Brianna Turley
Kaysville, Utah, Davis High School
Brianna Turley is a four-time 5A singles champion out of Davis High School and holds a perfect 66-0 record throughout her high school career. She has recorded one Golden Match, not giving up a single point to her opponent, in a regional final match up.
Turley on Choosing Utah
"I chose Utah because I love the coach, the team and the school. I love that I'm able to be close to home, but still challenge myself with Pac-12 competition. The academics at Utah also influenced my decision. I'm very excited to get a good education while playing the sport I love."
Iandolo on Turley
"Brianna has been one of the top players in the Intermountain section since the age of 10. She comes from an incredible tennis family and she is the most skilled junior player in the country when it comes to doubles. She will come in and have an immediate impact on our line up in both singles and doubles."
Laguna Niguel, Calif., Dana Hills High School
Throughout her high school career, Pletcher collected three All-Country First Team selections, was named Rookie of the Year as a freshman and MVP as a senior. She collected one South Coast League Singles title, while also winning a CIF title as a sophomore and taking CIF state as a junior.
Pletcher on Choosing Utah
"It was a mixture of everything. I loved the area and the campus. I loved the girls. I felt like I fit in very well. I feel like Mat is a really determined coach to really improve his team He's so focused and driven and I really like the about him. I have a similar personality, so I feel like I could be coached really well by him. And of course, the Pac-12. I've always dreamed of playing in the Pac-12, so it was a perfect fit for me."
Iandolo on Pletcher
"Margo is somebody I've been watching play since her freshman year. At that point, she was on track to be one of the best recruits in the nation. She had some unfortunate injuries her junior year, but she's still arguably one of the top recruits in Southern California. I am very happy to have signed her."
Taylor Calton
Highland, Utah, Lone Peak High School
Calton helped Lone Peak to two state titles her freshman and sophomore seasons, while also taking the state singles title as a sophomore in 2012. For this performance, Calton was recognizes as the Utah Female Athlete of the Year for all sports. She was also awarded the Hillary Doyle Sportsmanship Award.
Calton on Choosing Utah
"I grew up in Utah. I grew up knowing they're the best and wanted to play on that level really bad. I know what it means to be a Ute."
Iandolo on Calton
"Taylor is a local product and somebody who had great size and athleticism. She's only recently really starting to realize her potential. She's only going to get better. In the last year, no player in the country has show greater improvement."
