OMAHA, Neb. - Senior forward Taryn Wicijowski recorded her second straight double-double and freshman forward Tanaeya Boclair scored 14 points, but the University of Utah women's basketball team lost at Creighton, 64-56, Thursday night at Sokol Arena.
Utah (1-1) held a 40.0-35.5 edge in shooting percentage, including a 51.9 (14-27) clip in the second half and the Utes shot 50.0 (5-10) from 3-point territory. The Utes connected on 11 of 13 attempts from the free throw line (84.6), compared to 65 percent for the Bluejays.
Wicijowski's second consecutive double-double to start the season came with 14 points and 13 rebounds against the Bluejays. She was 4-for-4 on free throws to go with a pair of assists.
Boclair turned in her 14 points off a 6-for-10 night shooting to go with four rebounds, which was her first career double-digit point effort. The San Antonio native had seven first-half points after knocking down three of her first five shots.
Sophomore forwards Paige Crozon and Malia Nawahine each posted nine points apiece. Crozon hit all four of her field goal attempts to go with six boards, while Nawahine was 4-for-4 on free throws to go with a pair of assists.
Danielle Rodriguez handed out a team-high five assists to go with six points and six rebounds.
There were two ties within the first three minutes of the contest before Creighton inched out to a four-point lead (8-4). Wicijowski scored six of Utah's first eight. Utah started 1-of-8 from field before regaining the lead (15-14). The Ute lead grew to as many as five (21-16), but unfortunately Creighton countered with a 7-0 run of its own to take a 23-21 lead into halftime. There were three lead changes and a pair of ties as the Utes limited the Bluejays to a 26.5 (9-34). Boclair paced the Ute offense with seven points, while Wicijowski grabbed a team-best six rebounds.
The paced picked up in the second 20 minutes as Crozon scored a lay-in on an offensive rebound to tie the game for the third time on Utah's first offensive possession of the second half. There would be one more tie (25-25) before a Boclair free throw gave the Utes a 26-25 edge, before the Bluejays scored six straight to grab a 31-25 lead, their largest of the contest. The Utes launched a 9-0 run that included an old-fashioned 3-point play by Wicijowski and 3-pointers by Nawahine and Rodriguez to give the Utes a 37-33 advantage. A Creighton 3-pointer cut the home team's deficit to one (37-36), but the Bluejays used a 7-0 spurt to extend to a six-point lead (43-37). Another Crozon layup broke the run but Creighton was able to grow its lead to 10 (60-50), but the Utes could not get any closer than eight before the final margin was set at 64-56.
Creighton (2-1) was led by 15 points by Marissa Janning.
The Utes continue their midwest road trip by traveling west on I-80 to take on No. 16/15 Nebraska on Sunday at 1 p.m. CT.
