Utah Head Coach Kyle Whittingham
On how the game played out:
"Got out-coached, got out-played; that was pretty apparent. The turning point in the game was the punt return that got called back. If we do end up having that one stand it's 21-17 and it's a ballgame. But it wasn't to be. We had a mistake on it apparently somewhere. It kind of spiraled out of control from there. We've got to regroup. We have one more game, got a chance to win eight games this year in the regular season. That's our goal, is to try to get that eighth win next week. By far our poorest performance of the year tonight, coaches and players. So, you move forward. You have to pick yourself up off the mat and regroup, and head to Colorado next weekend to get our eight win."
On any emotional issues coming into the game:
"No, we didn't start off too bad. Our defense gave up 14 points, one was off a turnover for a touchdown. I don't think there was an emotional letdown at the beginning at the game. Now as the end I thought there was. I thought that for the first time this year we didn't finish the game. I thought we were ready to play, but I thought that as the game unfolded and toward the end, we didn't finish it."
On the slow start by the offense:
"Good question. Why did we give up more points than we scored on offense? I don't know. We gave up 14 points on offense and scored 10. That's not a good recipe for winning games. We weren't very good. Didn't coach very well, didn't play very well."
TE Westlee Tonga
On the weather's impact on the game:
"It has an effect just because it makes it a little bit harder, but both teams play in the same weather. It's not like they're in a different stadium or anything. Just something you have to deal with, and we didn't adapt well. I don't think we, especially as an offense, played well."
On what caused the struggles of the offense:
"As a football team, especially as an offense, everybody's got to do their one-eleventh. I'm sure I missed some blocks, other people might have. One misread, one miscue by any one person on the offense creates havoc for us. Everyone had to be clicking on all cylinders, especially in this league."
SS Brian Blechen
On if this is the best offense Utah has faced:
"I don't know if it's the best offense, but tonight they played really well. Tonight, they were a good offense and we gave up too many big plays. Give them credit, they were working hard, but we made it easy on them by blowing a coverage or missing a gap. So that just gives them confidence and helps get them rolling. There were times we were just shooting ourselves in the foot."
Arizona Head Coach Rich Rodriguez
Rodriguez Opening Statement:
"I'm really proud of our guys. We played a really good football team on the road, with inclimate weather. They handled everything really maturely and I thought the energy was really good in warm ups. I guys kept their composure the whole time. Some guys that came in, who were back ups, came in a played pretty well. This was a good win. Normally we celebrate a win for 24 hours, but since we play our rival early we will enjoy it for 12 hours and move on."
Rodriguez on playing better than expected:
"I don't know, I need to go watch the film. There were times when our execution wasn't there, but it was hard. It was raining really hard in the second half, so being able to throw the ball was going to be an issue for both teams. We had to run it when they knew that we were going to run it, and we were able to do that. That part was pleasing. That was a really good team that was good in all three phases, and I thought our special teams performed well. We got big plays out of Nick Wilson and our quarterbacks and our defense. The way our defense played for four quarers, they just battled. We aren't the most impressive getting off the bus, but getting on the bus after the games they have been a little more impressive."
Rodriguez on how practicing in the sprinklers helped:
"I don't know. Maybe the guys will be able to tell you more about that. I know that in the first half it was like we over prepared, but in the second half when it started raining pretty hard it was like we had the sprinklers on. I got as wet today as I did on sprinkler day.
Rodriguez on putting up 520 yards of total offense on the Utes, which is the most:
"I think in the first quarter we had 30 plays, so I think that the tempo was good. We didn't have a lot of points, but I felt confident that we were executing better, especially with the weather conditions being what they were. It was going to be hard to execute some things on offense. The running game was the key, without question. We were able to run it and seal the game with the runs in the fourth quarter.
Rodriguez on Orchard:
"We were conscious where he was, but they are really good on both ends. He squeezed and made plays sometimes, that would force us to pull the ball and make the tackle. He is a really good player, but we were more just looking at schemes and trying to get a hat on a hat and get our backs to press it right. I thought that Nick in particular did a good job of that. We had a counter play that we had not run a lot and we put it in specifically for this game and those guys executed pretty well for our first week.
Rodriguez on preparing defense for Utah:
"Coach Kess and our defensive staff does a great job in preparation. We got some good players over there, but we are better as a total, compared to just individual guys. We have the Scooby Wrights and the Jared Tevis and really good individual players but I just think that Coach Kess is one of the best in the country. Our defensive staff is really prepared and they recognize and adjust really quickly.
