DALLAS--Utah punter Tom Hackett and defensive lineman Nate Orchard were announced today as first-team All-Americans by the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA).
The FWAA is the last of the five organizations used by the NCAA to determine consensus All-Americans to announce its team, and Hackett's inclusion on all five (four first team) assures the Ray Guy Award winner of consensus status. Orchard is also still in the running for consensus honors, with first-team recognition from Walter Camp and the FWAA, and second-team accolades by AP and Sporting News.
Hackett becomes the third Utah punter named to the FWAA first team, joining Marv Bateman (1970) and Louie Sakoda (2007). Orchard is the third Utah defensive lineman to earn first-team FWAA All-America honors, joining Steve Clark (1981) and Luther Elliss (1994). The only other time two Utah players made the FWAA All-America team in the same year was in 2004, when quarterback Alex Smith and offensive lineman Chris Kemoeatu were named to the FWAA first team.
In their history, the Utes have had 14 players earn 15 first-team FWAA All-America citations (Sakoda was a first-team punter in 2007 and a first-team kicker in 2008).
The FWAA All-America team is the second-longest continuously-published team in major college football.
Hackett will become Utah's fifth all-time consensus All-American when that team is announced. Utah's other consensus All-Americans are Elliss (1994), offensive lineman Jordan Gross (2002), defensive back Eric Weddle (2006) and Sakoda (unanimous consensus kicker in 2008).
