Utah is 7-4 under head coach Kyle Whittingham coming off a bye, and 95-40-6 all-time after a bye week.
It is Michigan head coach Brady Hoke's first loss to a non-conference opponent in Michigan Stadium (11-1). Michigan had previously won 20-straight September home games.
Utah won the turnover battle, 4-1 (three interceptions, one fumble recovery for Utah vs. one interception by Michigan). Utah last had three interceptions in a game against Colorado in 2012.
Three players made their first career starts - Kaelin Clay (receiver), Gionni Paul (linebacker) and Jason Fanaika (right end). It was Paul's first appearance at Utah after missing the first two games of the season with an injury.
Travis Wilson was 14-for-20 for 172 yards with one touchdown. He spent most of the second quarter on the sideline after an injury but returned after halftime. Wilson tied Frank Dolce for eighth all-time with his 30th career touchdown pass.
Kaelin Clay scored a touchdown on a 66-yard punt return in the second quarter. Of his six total punt returns this year, two have gone for touchdowns. The last person to have two punt returns for touchdowns in a season was Shaky Smithson in 2010. Clay led Utah with 129 all-purpose yards (13 receiving, 33 kick return, 83 punt return).
Brian Blechen recorded his ninth career interception in the second quarter. It was the Utes' first interception of the year. Gionni Paul and Tevin Carter each had their first career interceptions in the fourth quarter.
Andy Phillips was 4-for-5 in field goals with makes of 35, 38, 48 and 50 yards and a miss of 41 yards. He is 12-of-15 in his career from 40+ yards and he has two career field goals of 50+ yards (his career-long is 51 yards against Arizona State in 2013). The last time a kicker made four field goals in a game was Coleman Petersen against Pittsburgh in 2011.
Dres Anderson caught his third touchdown pass of the season (tying him for the team lead) in the third quarter, a 28 yard reception from Travis Wilson. Anderson had six receptions for 57 yards.
Bubba Poole led Utah in both rushing and receiving. He had three catches for 75 yards, including a game-high 67 yard catch. Poole also had nine carries for 40 yards for a total of 115 all-purpose yards.
Tom Hackett downed two punts inside the 15-yard line, including a punt at the three-yard line in the fourth quarter. He has 14 career punts inside the five-yard line, including four this season.
Gionni Paul led Utah with 14 tackles while Jared Norris was second on the team with nine tackles. Paul also had a fumble recovery. Hunter Dimick forced a fumble in the fourth quarter.
Utah had 10 pass breakups, its most in a game since recording nine breakups against BYU in 2011. The last time Utah had 10 in a game was against New Mexico in 2007.
Utah had three rushing yards in the first half and 78 rushing yards in the second half.
