Mary Bowman, Utah's Senior Associate Athletics Director for Student-Athlete Support Services and Senior Woman Administrator (SWA), has announced she will retire in December after 19 years at the U.
The Iowa native was hired in 1996 as Utah's first director of student-athlete support services. She was promoted to assistant athletics director in 1999 and was named Utah's SWA in 2003. In 2005, she became an associate athletics director and in 2011 was promoted to senior associate A.D.
"My time with Utah athletics has been an unbelievable experience and I have met a lot of great people not only in our department and at the U., but across the country," said Bowman. "I am grateful to (Athletics Director) Chris Hill for giving me the opportunity to work here and I hope I've made some sort of impact on the student-athletes. Now, I'm looking forward to traveling, gardening and spending time with family and friends. I'm going to wear sweats and get rid of all my work clothes," laughed Bowman, who not only oversaw the support services areas but also was the administrator for several teams.
Her supervisory duties in student-athlete support services included the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), the Life Skills program and the Student-Athlete Wellness team. She also served as the administrator for the athletics department's academic services, athletic training, strength and conditioning for the "Olympic" sports and sport nutrition. She is currently the sport supervisor for volleyball, soccer, skiing and softball, and previously held the same role with the track and field and baseball teams.
Bowman has had a number of NCAA appointments, including the Softball Selection Committee, the Softball Rules Committee and the Ski Committee. She was an NCAA site representative for softball for eight years and was the tournament director for the 2014 NCAA Ski Championships.
"Mary has been an incredible advocate for our student athletes and she makes sure we always remember our primary mission is to do right by them first and foremost," said Athletics Director Dr. Chris Hill. "She has crossed paths with more of our student-athletes than probably any other single person in this department and she has worked tirelessly to make sure their academic, emotional and nutritional needs are met. Mary has been a great employee and friend and we will all miss her, although she deserves a chance to do some things for herself after doing so much for so many all these years."
Before joining the Utah athletics staff, Bowman was a teacher, coach and counselor at the high school level for 20 years in both Colorado and Salt Lake City. In 1977, she was named the Colorado Volleyball Coach of the Year while coaching at Eagle Valley High School. She later coached volleyball and was an assistant girls' basketball coach at Salt Lake City's East High School.
Bowman graduated with a bachelor's degree in secondary education from Northern Colorado, where she played on the varsity basketball team. She earned a master's degree in educational psychology from Utah in 1988. She will receive her master gardener certification through the Utah State extension in November.
Bowman and her late husband John have two sons: J.J. and Chris.
