POCATELLO, Idaho- The Utah women's track and field team finished the first day of action at the Mountain State Games, claiming two of the top-three spots in the shot put.
The Utes were led by redshirt senior Destanae Howerton-Davis' first-place performance. Howerton-Davis recorded a throw of 14.53 meters, followed by sophomore Kassie Nagel in third with a throw measuring 13.77 meters.
Meanwhile, the distance group traveled to Seattle, Washington to compete at the Washington Invitational. In the 5,000-meter run, the Utes were represented by seniors Rebekah Winterton and Lauren Mills. Winterton competed in the fast second heat, where she began the race with an impressive first mile, however, couldn't hold on and finished 13th overall with a time of 17:18.23. Mills finished fifth in her heat, and 20th overall with a time of 17:37.92.
"I thought Lauren ran a solid race," head coach Kyle Kepler said. "She was on pace to record a personal record, but just fell off a little in the last 2,000 meters. Rebekah wasn't feeling well at all and was certainly well off her lifetime best. We want to make sure that we check her out and make sure that she is okay before we decide whether or not to have her race tomorrow."
In the only other event of the day, the Utes placed fifth in the distance medley with a time of 11:52.31. The medley consisted of Hannah McInturff, Rhianna Williams, Dakota Grossman, and Becky Sarmiento.
"I was very pleased with how the distance medley relay ran," Kepler said. "I'm sure we are probably not as fresh as we would like to be, but we've got to keep training so we can be where we want to be at the end of the year. Overall, it was a solid first day. The kids really competed and I thought that they gave great efforts, so there were certainly no issues there. I look forward to see how this group competes tomorrow."
The distance runners continue competition in Seattle at 2:20 p.m. with the 3,000-meter race. The rest of the track and field team will return to action in Pocatello at 11 a.m. with the weight throw.
