SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah ski team opens the 2015 campaign at home this week, hosting the Utah Invitational from Jan. 9-12 at Park City Mountain Resort and Soldier Hollow Resort.
First up for the week is a pair of RMISA giant slalom qualifier races on Jan. 6 and 7, which do not count towards any team scoring but are used as an extra opportunity for skiers to earn qualification points for the NCAA Championships at the end of the season. The women's giant slalom will be held on Jan. 6 with the men's race on Jan. 7. The races will be hosted by the Park City Ski Team.
The Utah Invitational starts with the women's giant slalom on Friday, Jan. 9, with the men's GS on Saturday, Jan. 10. The Nordic races start on Sunday, Jan. 11, with the women's 5-km (11 a.m. start) and men's 10-km (10 a.m. start) freestyle races, while alpine holds its men's and women's slalom races. The meet closes with the Nordic classical races on Monday, Jan. 12, with the women's 10-km and men's 15-km, with the men's mass start at 9:30 a.m. with the women scheduled to go off at 10:45 a.m. All alpine races have a tentative start time of 9:30 a.m.
The nordic races will be held on the Olympic course at Soldier Hollow, while the alpine races are on Payday at Park City Mountain Resort.
"We are fired up to begin the RMISA season on our home venues!" Utah Director of Skiing Kevin Sweeney said. "Our strength lies in the fact we are a well balanced team and can score well in each discipline. Fall training has been outstanding for both squads. I am optimistic we can open well with our balance of returning veterans and the spirit and intensity of our new team members. Though we will focus on individual NCAA qualifying, understandably this is an exciting time for us as we evaluate where we stand."
The Utes return seven All-Americans and 10 skiers who competed in last year's NCAA Championships in addition to several recruits with a wealth of international experience.
On the Nordic side, two-time All-American junior Niklas Persson leads the men, which returns every skier from last season. Junior Noe Bellet and sophomore Kevin Bolger also represented the Utes at the NCAA Championships last year while sophomore Oscar Ivars was an alternate. For the women, junior Sloan Storey is a three-time All-American and sophomore Anna-Lena Heynen also raced at NCAA's last season with sophomore Josefin Nilsson serving as an alternate.
"It's nice to launch the 2015 RMISA season at home," Utah head Nordic coach Abi Holt said. "My goal for these competitions is to get our full roster to the starting lines feeling healthy and well-rested after our holiday break. We are aiming to open the RMISA season with some smart, strong races here on our home course, which we hope will reward us with some strong results early in the season."
The women's alpine team is stacked with talent, with three All-Americans returning in sophomore Chloe Fausa, senior Kristiina Rove and senior Ana Kobal. They will be strengthened by junior Teagen Palmer and sophomore Lauren Samuels, both who were NCAA alternates in 2014. For the men, junior Andy Trow is a two-time slalom All-American while sophomore Joergen Brath also earned All-America honors last year. Junior Tim Hribar is a two-time NCAA alternate.
Incoming recruits include 2014 Olympians Dominic Demschar (alpine, Australia) and Veronika Mayerhofer (nordic, Austria). Nick Hendrickson spent five years with the U.S. Nordic Combined team.
