PROVO, Utah- Getting the 2015 indoor season underway, the Utah throwers posted solid performances at the BYU Invitational. The Utes were led by the veteran leadership of seniors Destanae Howerton-Davis and Aoife Hickey, who captured first place in the weight throw and shot put events, respectively.
“It was a solid start,” Utah head coach Kyle Kepler said. “At this time of the year it is really about getting out there, getting your feet wet, and competing. As a head coach, I look more at how they compete than how far they actually throw. We obviously still have a lot of work to do, a lot of technical things that can get better. It was a good start and I am excited to get things going.“
The Utes were impressive in the shot put with two athletes finishing in the top three. Capturing the event title was redshirt senior Destanae Howerton-Davis, posting a mark of 47 feet, 1 inch. Sophomore Kassie Nagel finished third overall with a throw measuring 42 feet, 8.25 inches.
The weight throw featured two impressive performances for the Utes. Leading the way for the Utes was senior Aoife Hickey, who captured the event title with a throw of 58 feet, 10 inches. Securing third place was sophomore Ilse Kaaja, throwing a distance of 55 feet, 7 inches.
The Utes return to competition next Friday at the Snake River Open in Pocatello, Idaho.
