- Sophomore Adora Anae notched 20 kills and fellow sophomore Carly Trueman tallied 13 kills to help guide the Utah volleyball team to a 3-1 win over the Oregon Ducks (25-23, 25-22, 20-25, 25-23) Friday night at the Huntsman Center.
The Utes (8-14, 2-9) snapped a nine-match losing streak and head coach Beth Launiere recorded her 499th career win with the victory over the Ducks (10-10, 4-7). Utah, who fell to Oregon in five sets earlier this season in Eugene, Ore., has now won two consecutive matches against the Ducks at home.
The Ducks seemed to have all the momentum after going on a 7-1 run and taking a 9-5 lead early in the first set, but the Utes called a timeout and kept pace with the visiting squad until going on a 6-0 run and taking a 21-17 lead. Utah went up set-point with a kill from Anae, but the Ducks scored the next two points to pull within one point, 24-23, and forcing the Utes to call a timeout. The break in play helped as Utah got another kill from Anae out of the timeout to give the Utes the first set 25-23.
Utah jumped out to an early 10-6 lead in the second set, but Oregon countered with a 9-1 run to go ahead 15-11. An attack error from the Ducks led to a Utah 9-2 run and a 20-17 lead. The Ducks got back-to-back points, but Utah closed out the frame winning five of the last eight points to win the set 25-22 and take a 2-0 lead into the intermission.
The Utes led 5-2 early in the third set, but Oregon used runs of 7-3 and 7-0 to take a commanding 18-13 lead. Utah managed to get back into the set with a 6-2 run, but the Ducks closed the frame with a 4-1 run and won 25-20 to force the match into a fourth set.
Oregon led 10-6 midway through the fourth set, but freshman Berkeley Oblad opened a 5-0 run with her kill and the Utes took its first lead of the set, 11-10, on senior Kendall Cygan's service ace. After trading points, Utah would later use a 4-0 run to go up 17-14, but the Ducks came back to tie the set 19-19 following an attack error from the Utes. Oregon would take a 20-19 lead and later went up 23-22, but Utah called a timeout to stop the momentum. The timeout worked in Utah's favor again as Anae followed with a pair of kills to go up 24-23. Senior Brenna DeYoung and freshman Emma Kirst would then put the match away with a block to give Utah both set, 25-23, and the match, 3-1.
Here it is, the final rally that sealed it for the Utes and gave @UtahVolleyball the #12Best Moment of the Match! https://t.co/UXlAzNnxFZ
