SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah women's tennis team announced the signing of Emily Maxfield to a National Letter of Intent, head coach Mat Iandolo announced Thursday. Maxfield will join the Utes for the 2016-17 season.
Maxfield is from the River Springs Charter School in Murietta, Calif., and was a top-12 prospect in the state of California and in the top 50 nationally. "We are very pleased to announce the signing of Emily Maxfield," Iandolo said. "In the last 12 months, Emily has developed into one of the top prospects in the extremely competitive Southern California section, she is one of the most improved players in the Nation and I only expect that trend to continue."
As a junior playing No. 1 singles for Murrieta Valley High School in 2014, Maxfield won the Southwestern League singles championship, was named the league MVP as well as the Riverside County Player of Year. She helped Murrieta Valley advance to the CIF-SS Division 2 finals and win the Southwestern League title.
The daughter of David and Michelle Maxfield, she has two siblings, Courtney (20) and Ashley (16).
Maxfield on Choosing Utah:
"I chose Utah because it was located in Salt Lake City with so many opportunities for networking and internships. It is a beautiful campus with a lot of school spirit and the awesome fueling stations found throughout the University."
Pro Tour Tennis Academy Director Bill Behrens on Maxfield:
"Coaching Emily throughout her junior career has been a great pleasure. She has had ups and downs just like all athletes do. This last year has been more ups than downs, which has her on the top of her game presently. I have great confidence that she will be a productive member of the University of Utah team as a new Ute player going into her freshman year. Go Utes!!!"
