Utah Head Coach Kyle Whittingham
Opening statement:
I am so proud of our seniors and so very happy for those guys. They deserve this. They deserve to go out on a winning note to end the regular season. [Being] co-champs of the Pac-12 South - that is a great accomplishment for our seniors. It was a nine-win regular season, which is an all-time high since joining the Pac-12. I just can say enough good things about those guys. The leadership, their work ethic, their determination, they have really led us through this journey.
On the game overall:
The defense played exceptionally well. We had a bunch of takeaways and we did just enough on offense to get it done. The storyline was the defense. Tom Hackett's punting was outstanding and so was Andy Phillips' placekicking. Our defense just hung in there and kept giving the ball back to the offense. There was a couple of drives that we just could not get into the end zone, but other than that I was really proud of the way the defense played. Our defense has played well all season long and we are one of the two best defenses in the Pac-12 statistically. We had a lot of good things going defensively this year.
On the match-up with Colorado:
It seems to be every year, a battle. They play very hard and they are well coached. They have gotten better every year by my estimation, but sometimes your record doesn't reflect that. They took USC and UCLA right down to the wire. I have a lot of respect for coach MacIntyre and what he is building there.
On the emotions of the season with this group:
Well the first six weeks the emotions were very good. Every one was excited and then we had a setback against USC, but came back and won a couple of ballgames. The biggest disappointment was not being able to get one of these last two prior to this game, which would have really given us the outright championship and the chance to go to the Pac-12 Championship game next week. That was tough to take, but we have no one else to blame but ourselves and we own that. This team has been very resilient and to come back and get a win today was good. Ending the regular season on a positive note was very important to us.
Quarterback Travis Wilson
On playing his final game at Rice-Eccles Stadium:
It is definitely an emotional time, but I was glad that were able to get a win on our last game here. I couldn't be more thankful and happier for all of the seniors on this team and us just going out the right way.
On how this past season went:
It has definitely been a good season. I had my rocky moments, but I still felt like we had a special season and a great season. I can't thank my teammates enough for that.
Defensive Tackle Vilseni Fauonuku
On getting his sacks in the final game:
Yeah, that was pretty crazy. It all just kind of happened. I take zero credit for that. All of those sacks came from the other guys on the defensive line with me. They created great pressure and just sit right there and were in the right place at the right time.
On the defense picking up the slack today:
It's our job. It is our job to go out there and line up. We just take it one play at a time. It doesn't matter if the offense is rocky or if special teams are rocky, we just do what we do. We just go out there and try to play every play and move on to the next.
Linebacker Gionni Paul
On how he felt on Senior Day:
I felt great. It was nice to go out on a bang like that. We can celebrate that. It was awesome.
Running Back Joe Williams
On his workload for this game:
I'm pretty banged up, but it was just something that I had to do. I had to ball out for the seniors today.
On sending the seniors out right:
It was more of an honor. We had a good week of practice and coach Whitt instilled into our minds on Monday that we really had to give this game our all because it was for the seniors. For me, it was just doing what I had to do - either running or helping out on pass protection.
Colorado Head Coach Mike MacIntyre
On sending seniors off without making a bowl game in their career:
The seniors have set a good legacy for us. They have worked extremely hard. They've hung tough here and pushed to provide good leadership for our team. You always want to end on the best note you can and we didn't.
On how the defense played:
Defense played well. We are getting better and better on defense. We had some injuries earlier in the year on defense, and have compensated for that now having the guys in that have played for a while and kept getting better as the year's gone on. Adding the guys we lost to what we had out there, we should have a very, very good defense.
On his team's running game against the Utah defense:
We had quite a few sacks there that take away from the rushing yardage. I wish it was like the NFL and you could really see what you ran for. But we had a few good runs and weren't able to establish it as much as we had liked. And there at the end we had to throw it a little bit more.
On the blocked field goal:
We had a mess-up inside. We've been working on it. The kid didn't do it right and they squeezed through and got their hand up. That's something that's inexcusable.
On red zone offensive struggles:
Number one, not having Sefo [Liufau]. Because when we had Sefo we could run him in and he could throw it. And then not executing well enough. We've got to figure out a better drawing board for that. They're pretty good down there, too. But we've got to make more plays down there.
