SALT LAKE CITY - After nearly three weeks away from competition, the Utah ski team returns to the hill for two meets in Alaska, with the Utes competing in the Alaska-Anchorage Invitational and the RMISA Championship/NCAA West Regional from Feb. 23-28.
The Alaska-Anchorage Invitational kicks off with the Nordic women's 5-km and men's 10-km freestyle races on Feb. 23 followed by the 10-km classical races on Feb. 24. The alpine teams race in the giant slalom on Feb. 25 and the slalom on Feb. 26.
The RMISA Championship/NCAA West Regional begins on Feb. 27 with the alpine giant slalom races and the Nordic men's 10-km and women's 5-km freestyle races. The alpine slalom races and Nordic women's 15-km and men's 20-km classical races will be held on Feb. 28.
The Nordic teams race at Hillside Trails and Kincaid Park in Anchorage while the alpine teams will be at Alyeska Resort in Girdwood.
"We are looking forward to Alaska," Utah Director of Skiing Kevin Sweeney said. "Our training has been compromised a bit by the warm weather, however we have managed to get in some quality sessions at both Soldier Hollow and Park City. Kudos to those venues for doing a great job managing the soft snow. This period since New Mexico has allowed us to really grow as a team. We were able to spend some excellent time together on and off the race course, watching and supporting Kristiina [Rove] and Dom [Demschar] at Alpine World Championships, socially having some fun together, excellent strength training sessions, healing some medical issues and really putting in some quality training days focusing on what we have in front of us. Final NCAA team selection will be determined in Alaska and I can tell we are focused on skiing well there. It's a positive feeling for sure as we do have some great team chemistry. I feel like we are on track as we hit this last push before the Championships."
Veronika Mayerhofer leads the women's Nordic team with three wins and five podium finishes in six races. Sloan Storey has finished in the top six in every race with one podium finish this year. Natalia Muller and Anna-Lena Heynen each have three top-10 finishes.
In men's Nordic, Niklas Persson has two top-five and four top-10 finishes. Noe Bellet and Kevin Bolger each also have four top-10 finishes while Nick Hendrickson has three top-six finishes.
"This year's race schedule has included a two consecutive weekends off from racing-- a real anomaly for us," Utah head Nordic coach Abi Holt said. "I wasn't sure how this kind of mid-winter break would feel, but it's been great! Amidst insanely nice 60-degree days in the city, the crew at Soldier Hollow has done an incredible job of maintaining excellent skiing conditions. This past couple of weeks has been filled with morning training skis, afternoon tanning sessions, and weekend time trials. Overall, I think the team has enjoyed a nice mental break, is in shape physically, has gotten caught up on school work, and we are now geared up for the championship portion of the season. It been a good rest, but we are ready to go again."
In women's alpine, Chloe Fausa has two wins and three podium finishes in six races. Kristiina Rove has four top-five finishes this year with three finishes on the podium. Ana Kobal is coming off a strong New Mexico meet with finishes of third and seventh in the slalom races. She has two podium finishes this year.
For the men's alpine team, Dominic Demschar has a win and two podium finishes this year along with four top-10 finishes. Andy Trow has five top-10 finishes with one podium finish. Endre Bjertness has four top-10 finishes with Joergen Brath placing in the top 10 twice.
Both Rove and Demschar are returning from the World Alpine Championships, held in Vail/Beaver Creek from Feb. 2-15. Rove competed in the slalom and giant slalom for Finland while Demschar represented Australia in the giant slalom.
The NCAA Championships are in Lake Placid, N.Y., from March 11-14. A full team is 12 skiers, three from each gender and discipline.
