SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah baseball team dropped the rubber match against Washington State on Sunday, 6-1, to close out a three-game series against the Cougars.
Washington State scored runs in the fourth, sixth, seventh and eighth innings to go on to the win. Utah avoided the shutout with a run in the bottom of the ninth.
The Utes had three of their five hits in the ninth inning, led by two hits from Dallas Carroll (2-for-4). Utah struggled with WSU pitcher Sam Triece, who surrendered just one hit and struck out seven with no walks over six innings of work.
Jayson Rose pitched 5 2/3 innings for Utah, allowing three runs (one earned) on seven hits with one strikeout and two walks. Bret Helton allowed two runs on two hits over 1/3 inning. Tanner Thomas allowed one run on two hits with two walks over 1 2/3 innings. Brock Duke had one strikeout over the final 1 1/3 innings.
Washington State struck first after three fourth-inning hits led to a run for the Cougars. WSU continued to pull ahead with a pair of unearned runs in the sixth inning after a single with the bases loaded and two outs. An RBI triple after a leadoff walk plus a sacrifice fly scored two more runs in the seventh, giving the Cougars a 5-0 lead. Washington State went up 6-0 following a pair of hits in the eighth.
In the ninth inning, Cody Scaggari doubled down the left field line with one out while Carroll followed with a single to put runners at the corners. AJ Young hit an RBI single to put the Utes on the board.
Utah continues at home this weekend against 10th-ranked USC, with the three-game series beginning on Friday, May 1, at 8:00 p.m. MT. All three games will be televised on the Pac-12 Networks.
