SALT LAKE CITY - Former Utah skier Miles Havlick and incoming skier Leah Lange both had strong performances at the 2016 U.S. Cross Country Championships, held in Houghton, Michigan, from Jan. 3-9.
Lange was selected to represent the U.S. at the 2016 Cross Country World Junior Championship, held in Rasnov, Romania from Feb. 18-29, 2016.The top six athletes who score the best in two of the first three races at the U.S. Cross Country Ski Championships are chosen for the team. Lange placed 20 in the junior women's 10-km classical, 21st in women's freestyle sprints and 26th in the 5-km freestyle.
Lange will join the Utes for the 2017 season.
"Each year the Junior World Championship berths are competitive and hard earned," Utah head Nordic coach Abi Holt said. "The University of Utah Ski team aims to recruit athletes who are skiing at this level, so I have known that making this team was one of Leah's biggest goals for this season. However, ski racing can be unpredictable, so I am thrilled to see that Leah has stayed on course through the fall and succeeded at nabbing one of these spots. She will gain invaluable international racing experience on this trip, and I'm sure Leah will return from these races in Romania even better prepared for her future as a Ute."
Havlick, who won two national titles with the Utes and was a seven-time All-American from 2010-13, was the third American in the men's freestyle sprint race (fifth overall). Havlick also finished 21st overall in the men's 30-km freestyle, 22nd in the classic sprint and 25th in the men's 15-km classic.
"Miles' podium finish at the U.S. National Championships this week is noteworthy for the University of Utah because it shows that it IS possible for young athletes to take a few years to gain a college education and then to return to competitive racing with the top athletes in the country," Holt said. "We were always proud of Miles' accomplishments during his years as a Ute, and he continues to represent us well as an alum."
