BERKELEY, Calif. – The 18^th-ranked Utah football team rallied from an early 14-0 deficit and held California to its lowest offensive output this season before the Utes were stopped at the one-yard line in the final seconds in a loss the Golden Bears, 28-23 on Saturday evening.

The Utes fall to 4-1, 1-1 in the Pac-12, with the loss.

California took an early 14-0 lead before the Utes rallied back to cut the Golden Bears lead to 14-10 by halftime. Andy Phillips hit a 40-yard field goal to start the second quarter while Armand Shyne scored on a four-yard touchdown run before the half.

Utah took its first lead of the game, 17-14, with 4:05 left in the third quarter on Shyne's second touchdown of the day, a one-yard rush. California came back on its next drive to retake the lead with a 74-yard scoring drive, 21-17. On Utah's next drive the Utes drove 63 yards to the Cal 10-yard line before the Golden Bears snapped Utah's streak of four-straight fourth-down conversions in the game, which led to a 89-yard scoring drive for Cal and a 28-17 lead.

Utah got the ball back with 9:03 remaining in the game and drove 75 yards with the help of 68 yards passing (3-for-3) from Troy Williams, culminating in a one-yard touchdown run from Zack Moss to again make it a two-possession game. The two-point conversion failed to put the Cal advantage at 28-23.

The Ute defense forced a three-and-out and the offense got the ball back with 4:21 left at the Cal 49-yard line. On fourth-and-goal at the 11-yard line a Cal pass interference call gave the Utes a fresh set of downs with 14 seconds remaining at the two-yard line, but Utah was unable to punch it in three times before time expired.

The Utes held the Bears to their lowest scoring output and fewest total yards of the season, out-gaining the Bears 442-362 yards. Cal entered the game averaging 45 points and 594.5 yards a game. After relinquishing 174 yards and 14 points in the first quarter, the Utah defense held Cal to 14 points and 188 yards over the final three quarters.

Utah got career games from Armand Shyne (99 yards rushing and two touchdowns) and Raelon Singleton (98 yards receiving). Troy Williams threw for 266 yards, going 24-for-43 with no interceptions.

Utah possessed the ball for 42 minutes.

Chase Hansen had a team-high six tackles and Brian Allen's interception was the game's only takeaway for either team. Pita Taumoepenu had the Utah's lone sack of the day.

Utah returns home to face Arizona on Saturday, Oct. 8.
