No 21 Utes Fall to No. 9 Colorado 27-22
11/26/2016 10:17 PM | Football
Big special teams plays and some critical stops by the defense kept Utah (8-4, 5-4 Pac-12) in the game against the Pac-12 South Division champion Buffs (10-2, 8-1 Pac-12), but Utah's only offensive touchdown came with 1:34 remaining in the game.
Utah opened the scoring with 9:17 in the first quarter when Boobie Hobbs returned a punt 55 yards for a touchdown to give the Utes a 7-0 lead. It was Hobbs' longest punt return of the season and his second career punt return for a touchdown. After forcing the Buffs to punt, Utah missed an opportunity to expand its lead when Tim Patrick dropped a Troy Williams' pass in the end zone and Andy Phillips was wide right on a 45-yard field goal attempt—his only miss of the night.
Colorado capitalized on Utah's miscues by scoring a touchdown on its ensuing possession to tie the score at 7-7. Fortunately for Utah, the Buffs had their own issues with dropped passes, including one to a wide open George Frazier in the end zone, and came away with just six points on back-to-back trips inside the Utah 10-yard line. At halftime, CU led 13-7.
On its first offensive series after the break, Troy Williams marched Utah downfield to first and goal on the Colorado nine. When Joe Williams broke free for a 7-yard run, Utah had second and goal at the 2-yard line. But Troy Williams was tackled for a loss and threw an incompletion on third down, leading to a field goal by Phillips that cut Colorado's lead to 13-10.
Utah's defense forced Colorado to punt on the next series and, again, the Utes marched inside the Colorado red zone. This time, Utah came away with nothing when Joe Williams fumbled the ball away on the 2-yard line. The Utes would get a third-straight crack deep inside Colorado territory minutes later after Chase Hansen forced a Buff fumble that was recovered by Chris Hart. The Utes advanced to the Buff 2-yard line on second down before stalling again. Phillips' 22-yard field goal tied the score at 13-13 with 4:10 remaining in the third quarter.
Colorado responded with a touchdown on its next possession to take a 20-13 lead entering the fourth quarter. The Utes would outscore CU 9-7 in the final stanza, including a 7-yard touchdown pass from Troy Williams to Demari Simpkins with 1:34 left in the game. But Utah's 2-point conversion attempt failed, as did Phillips' onside kick and Colorado ran the clock out to snap a four-game losing streak to the Utes.
