SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah ski team has been named the 2015 RMISA regular season champions, with the Utes scoring 2,525 total points to win the title, beating Colorado by just 21 points.
The Utes have won two of the four invitationals this year - the Utah Invitational and the Colorado Invitational. The Utes finished second at the New Mexico Invitational and third at the Montana State Invitational.
"I have tremendous respect for this team on receiving this recognition," Utah Director of Skiing Kevin Sweeney said. "From day one this season, the staff and athletes have been focused and come to the start line to win. Day-in and day-out during a long season this is always a challenge. Our team has some of the best momentum and chemistry I can recall. They are extremely talented. It's great watching them push each other, and at the same time be a really solid support group for each other. At the onset of the season I thought we had a solid team, with depth and the potential to score extremely well in each discipline. This is undoubtedly unfolding to be an accurate assessment, and a true honor of which to be a part."
Utah's 21-point victory over Colorado was the closest battle for the team title since 2009.
The Utes were the top overall Nordic school and the top overall women's team, while ranking second overall in the men's standings.
"I'm thrilled to hear that the Utes have won the team award this year," Utah head Nordic coach Abi Holt said. "Since our first day of fall training I have watched the Nordic team work together to make this season a full team effort. This group is as mutually supportive as any I have ever worked with, and I think they will be very proud to take home this team accolade together."
The Nordic team has two victories and 18 podium finishes this season. Sloan Storey won the 10-km classic and Nick Hendrickson won the men's 10-km freestyle at the Utah Invite. Veronika Mayerhofer has seven podium finishes in eight races with Niklas Persson finishing on the podium in five races.
The alpine side has seven wins and 14 podium finishes. Julie Mohagen has three wins in the slalom and six total podiums while Chloe Fausa has two giant slalom wins. Endre Bjertness has two wins in the giant slalom and three total podium finishes.
The Utes prepare for the RMISA Championship/NCAA Western Regional meet this weekend, Feb. 26-27.
