UTAH PLAYER QUOTES
Quarterback Tyler Huntley
On his receivers stepping up today...
"They did a good job just warming up, they keep doing a good job of just catching the balls."
On their explosive plays against the Washington secondary...
"We were just ready to play, we were ready to execute the plays down field."
On if this loss is harder because they know they played well...
"Every loss is tough. We just weren't doing enough."
On if he felt they did enough against the Washington defense...
"No, we didn't do enough. We still left a lot of points off the board."
Cornerback Julian Blackmon
On if they expected the late timeout...
"That was the coach's decision, we weren't really sure what was going on."
On if Jake Browning started doing anything different down the stretch to make plays...
"He was just able to extend plays like he's been doing all year. We would break down the offense and one thing that we learned a lot was that we made sure that we covered our guys because he was really good at making those plays stay alive and that's what he did those last two drives. We have to make more plays."
On the late touchdown pass from Browning to Gaskin...
"Yeah I read the play from the beginning and I jumped and came down at a bad angle and missed it."
On what their performance tonight meant to the team...
"It makes us want to win the next game more. I felt like we played well as a group, we just didn't come out with the win. But if we play this way next week I feel like we could do a lot better."
HEAD COACH QUOTES
Head Coach Kyle Whittingham
On the late timeout and if they would have been able to run another play if he wouldn't have called it...
"I don't know, good question. Probably, but I don't know. You'd have to ask Chris that. But if they were not being aggressive they would have taken a knee. What's the point in running a play if they're not going to try to at least maneuver into field goal range. So we called timeout, had them in decent field position, second and eight or second and nine, and one incomplete pass and another timeout if they decide to run the ball. So it was a long shot, but we're just trying to win and it obviously didn't work out. You know, they were making some plays after that timeout and we just couldn't find a way to stop them. In hindsight, I probably wouldn't have called the timeout. But at the time, we were just trying to be aggressive and get the ball back to a guy who has about a sixty-yard range field goal wise."
On being aggressive with play calling tonight...
"We had to be aggressive against a team like this. On the road in particular, it's a tough place to play, and you have to be aggressive. We went for some fourth downs, converted them, had the onside kick and fake punt. So yeah, we're playing to win. Like I said, we just came up short. I thought we played very well for fifty-eight minutes."
On if Jake Browning did anything different in the final two drives...
"Not really. He threw the ball up and those receivers made some terrific plays. Like I said, they made the plays and we weren't able to at the end. You know, we had a chance to salt it away if we could make a first down. One more first, I don't know, a lot of ifs. Bottom line, they made the plays they needed to make to win that football game. "
