Head Coach Kyle Whittingham Opening statement…
"I am really pleased for our seniors to end the season that way and hopefully that ensures a bowl game. That's how they deserve to go out. It was great to see them respond the way they did. I was very pleased with the offense. In the second half, we had only five possessions. We did not put the game away during the last few drives. We had zero turnovers. Zack Moss almost had 200 yards. Troy Williams stepped in for Tyler Huntley and it was great to see him as a senior captain get the start and play the way he did. He was solid, along with offensive line. On special teams, Mitch Wishnowsky did not punt the ball well tonight. Matt Gay is building his case for the Lou Groza Award, going 2-for-2 on field goals. Defensively, more good than bad. One of the keys to the game was getting that takeaway when Colorado was driving and in striking distance. We never looked back from there. I am proud of the coaches. Troy Taylor was on the money with his play-calling and the same can be said about Morgan Scalley. It was a great way to end the regular season and now we sit back and see where and who we will be playing."
On the offense clicking this evening…
"It clicked last week also except for the final minutes. It takes some of the sting out of a frustrating season. We lost to the top three teams in the league, two on the road, by one, three and three points. This team was close. We have a bunch of fighters and as frustrating as those losses were, to be able to pull together the way they did tonight, is a credit to our seniors."
On Troy Williams' performance…
"He did well. He took care of the ball and did a nice job running the offense. He made some big throws and big runs. He was good in the run game. Two game balls were given out tonight, one to Troy and Zack Moss."
On Troy Williams' perseverance…
"I am very impressed. He has been a great teammate all season. He never sulked or pouted. His work ethic and preparation never dropped off. He has always responded and it is a credit to him as a person. He is very mature and team-oriented."
On the offensive line's performance…
"Even though it was not a steady progression due to some bumps in the second half of the year, I think the final analysis, with four or five of them back, we could have a formidable offensive line next year."
On his thoughts about the team…
"I think we are a pretty good 6-6 team. The bottom line is we have six wins and six losses. This team could have folded their tents, but they competed every week. The scores were a little different than what they should have been, but we competed every week."
On running the ball this evening…
"We had a good matchup in the trenches. We liked our front seven against their front seven. We thought we would have success running the ball and the plan was to be run heavy. Zack Moss went over 1,000 yards and if he keeps running like that during his career, he will be an impressive back. He made some impressive runs this evening."
On being bowl eligible…
"It is a big positive for a lot reasons. It is a chance to have a winning record. It beats the alternative, to being 5-7 and not going to one and now we get that little shot of adrenaline and being bowl eligible."
UTAH PLAYER QUOTES
Quarterback Troy Williams On getting a win…
"It feels good. I have had a long college career and it did not go as expected, but I am glad to go out with a win on Senior Night." On Zack Moss' performance…
"He was something else tonight. I don't know how many guys he ran over tonight. It was like playing Madden with Jerome Bettis in his prime. He was running dudes over and he broke 1,000 yards so that was big. He had a great game." On when he found out he was the starter…
"Yesterday after practice, Coach Troy Taylor came up to me and said Tyler Huntley was a little banged up. I just wanted to get in and help my team get a victory."
Running Back Zack Moss On gaining almost 200 yards…
"I just trust in my offensive line. I never put my mind on it and set myself up for that total. I just wanted to win for the seniors." On playing with such passion…
"There was a lot of energy tonight. Being the last regular season game there was a lot of emotion. Every one stepped up tonight. It felt good to get out there and play well for the seniors." On getting so many chances on the ground…
"I just wanted to will this team to a win. Coach Whittingham told us all week what type of team we would be facing. They give up a lot of yards on the ground and so I just prepared myself watching extra film and locked in during practice so I could do what it takes for this team." On getting 1,000 yards…
"It is something every college running back wants to do during your career. As a sophomore, it means a lot. I know I have a lot to do coming back next year but it will be a lot of fun."
Wide Receiver Darren Carrington III On his senior year…
"It was a blessing and fun. We never gave up despite all the adversity we faced this year. We always fought back and that's why I love this team. It was a blessing to play for Coach Whittingham. It was a fun journey." On Troy Williams…
"I think he is one of the best leaders there is. To go through what he has gone through, his play showed today. When your number is called, you have to step up like he did. Being a captain, he is a professional. Whenever his number is called you are going to get the best out of him." On this being his last home game…
"It sunk in last night when I wrote that post on social media. I will miss it a bunch. I will miss blocking for Zack and watching Troy and Tyler do their thing. I will miss college."
COLORADO COACH QUOTES
Head Coach Mike MacIntyre On Zack Moss' rushing performance for Utah…
"Their line blocked well and he ran over us. He was a very powerful runner tonight. We didn't do a good job of tackling and we work on that all the time. We should have been tackling low in the legs and taking him down but he ran really well and the line did a good job of opening up some holes for him. He was powerful."
On his team's 5-7 season…
"I'll look at it. I learned that from Bill Parcells. You don't look at it and say it right now when you are emotionally involved in everything. We'll look at it over the next couple of weeks and look at it over Christmas time now that we don't have to go to a bowl, evaluate everything and make decisions from there."
On what impact Tyler Huntley not playing had on his defense…
"They didn't do as many quarterback runs. Might have been better for us if Huntley did play. I'm not knocking Huntley, but they maybe wouldn't have run Moss as much and they would have run Huntley a little bit more. They basically did the same thing they always do, but they just run Huntley a little bit more than they run the other quarterbacks."
On if he was surprised by the way his team played in the first half…
"I was just surprised by the way we tackled and the way our offense was throwing it because we had been doing it well. Give credit to Utah and Kyle [Whittingham] because they did a good job on the different things they did. They were good at it."
On how hard it was to keep his team motivated…
"They played harder in the second half than they did in the first half. More energy, more emotion. We have a touchdown if we look to the right, and its 31-20. There's nobody within 20 yards of our receiver. We didn't look there and we kind of scrambled away and we fumbled. That wasn't all his fault, but if we look to the other side of the field its 31-20, you have a little momentum, you stop them, you score and get an onside [kick], there's a lot of things you can do. It's 31-20 with 11 minutes to go in the game, which is a pretty good comeback from being down 28-0. We're right there. I thought they came out and fought in the second half with resiliency and fire. I just think that Moss ran all over us in the first half and we didn't tackle very well. We were hitting him. He just ran over us."Â
