Utah Skiing’s Remme, Myrseth Win at RMISA Championships

BEAVER CREEK and MINTURN, Colo. - Roni Remme in women's slalom and Merete Myrseth in the women's 5-km classic both won races to lead the Utah ski team at the RMISA Championships/NCAA West Regional on Saturday afternoon. The Utes are third after the second day of competition.
It was Remme's second overall win and first slalom win of the season for the Utes. She had the fastest first and second runs on the day. Abby Ghent finished 11th with Julie Mohagen 13th for Utah's three scorers. Chloe Fausa was 14th. Sabine Krautgasser did not start the second run.
In the men's slalom, Endre Bjertness earned his third podium of the year with a third-place finish. Joergen Brath placed 14th with Sam Dupratt in 18th. Martin Grasic was 20th and Dominic Demschar 29th.
"I am really happy with third place today," Bjertness said. "In the first run I was surprised how straight and fast the course was, but managed to control it better in the second run. Super happy to wrap up the regular college season this way and looking forward to the finals in a week and a half."
"We could not be more excited with Roni's win today, she executed two runs flawlessly," Utah head alpine coach Jaka Korencan said. "Endre also performed really well on a flat course which is not our strength and got to the podium in a tough field. This really is a great motivation booster for upcoming NCAA's. Joergen is also peaking in both events but unfortunately smaller mistakes cost him some time in the second run. We were pleasantly surprised by Abby's slalom performance today, she really is turning into a great tech skier.
"Unfortunately we cannot be satisfied with the team performance this weekend, after a fantastic training section last week, expectations were much higher," Korencan continued. "We are skiing really well, however failed to execute as a team this weekend. Despite all that, we do have a great team of athletes traveling to the NCAA championships and I know that we can be extremely competitive."
In Nordic, it was Myrseth's third victory of the year. Guro Jordheim placed ninth for her seventh top-10 finish of the year while Leah Lange finished 12th. Natalia Müller finished 14th with Josefin Nilsson in 19th.
In the men's 10-km race, Martin Bergström finished third for his third podium finish of the year. Martin Mikkelsen was fifth for his first top-five finish of the season. Oscar Ivars had his second top-10 finish of the year with a 10th-place run. Jacob Engström finished 15th with Logan Diekmann in 22nd.
The Utes trail Colorado (499) and Denver (464.5) in the overall standings with 447 points. Montana State ranks fourth (418.5) with New Mexico in fifth (367.5).
The RMISA Championships conclude on Sunday, Feb. 26, with the women's 15-km and men's 20-km freestyle races.
