Utah Beach Volleyball Picks Up First Beach Tournament Win

Utah eliminated from Pac-12 Championships, but gets win over Oregon
TUCSON, Ariz. – The Utah beach volleyball team closed out its inaugural season, picking up its first ever beach tournament win at the Pac-12 Championships on Thursday in Tucson, Ariz.
No.8-seeded Utah opened the Pac-12 Championships in the first match of the tournament on Thursday morning against No.9-seeded Oregon. The Utes and Ducks battled to the last dual point with the decisive point coming from the No. 1 position.
Tied 2-2, Utah's top duo of junior Adora Anae and Dani Barton sealed the team victory, 3-2, after winning their match in a three-set thriller. Utah picked up its first ever beach tournament team victory on Thursday, along with claiming its first win over a Pac-12 team.
Anae and Barton dropped the first set, 21-13, to Lindsey Vander Weide and Brooke Van Sickle, but bounced back in a close second set, 21-19. Anae and Barton sealed the individual match and team dual in dramatic fashion, winning the third set 18-16.
Utah's No. 4 pairing of junior Tawnee Luafalemana and freshman Brianna Doehrmann picked up the first point in the dual to give the Utes a 1-0 lead. Luafalemana and Doehrmann defeated Lauren Page and Marine Hall-Poirier, winning in straight sets 21-11, 21-9.
As the No. 3 pair, junior Eliza Katoa and freshman Torre Glasker fell in three sets (21-13, 19-21, 8-15). Katoa and Glasker fell to Oregon's Willow Johnson and Maddy Silberger-Fran, which would tie the dual 1-1.
Junior Carly Trueman and freshman Bailey Choy teamed up in Utah's second position to face Taylor Agost and August Raskie. Trueman and Choy fell 21-19 in the first set, but would force a third set after winning big in the second set 21-7. The Utes took the third set, 15-10, to lead the dual 2-1.
In the No.5 position, sophomores Berkeley Oblad and Emily Twohig fell to Ronika Stone and Maggie Scott in three sets. The Utes fell short in the first set 21-16, won the second set 21-14, and dropped the deciding set 16-14. Oregon would tie the dual match 2-2, but Anae and Barton would take care of business in the No. 1 position to win the dual, 3-2.
Utah moved on in the Championship Bracket with the win over Oregon, but faced the difficult task in the next round, facing No. 1-seeded USC. USC swept Utah, 5-0, to continue their dominance and proved why they are ranked the No.1 team in the nation, along with being defending national champions.
With the team championships being double elimination, Utah competed in the contender's bracket and faced No. 5 seeded Stanford. Stanford jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead, picking up wins in the No. 1 and No. 3 positions in straight sets.
Utah competed in three sets in positions two, four, and five to keep their tournament hopes alive. Stanford eventually clinched the dual taking the point in the No. 5 position from Twohig and Oblad, winning in three sets 21-12, 19-21, 15-10. The Utes would fall in the second and fourth pairings to give Stanford the sweep, 5-0.
Two Utah pairs will compete Friday in the Pac-12 Pairs Championships. Junior Carly Trueman and freshman Bailey Choy will compete as the No.17 seed and open play at 4 p.m. MT. Trueman and Choy will face No.17-seeded Grace Campbell and Nicole Anderson from California. Junior Adora Anae and freshman Dani Barton will open play at 5 p.m. MT as the No.9 seed. Anae and Barton will face the No.8-seeded Kamila Tan and Madi Yeomans from UCLA.
