2016-17 SEASON IN REVIEW
Under the direction of first-year head coach
Garrett Clegg, the 2016-17 Utah Utes managed to have one of its better seasons in recent memory. Utah totaled a program-best five top-three finishes, while also collecting seven top-10 individual performances.
The Utes opened the season registering back-to-back-to-back top three performances, finishing second at both the Itani Quality Homes Collegiate (Sept. 12-13) and OGIO Utah Invitational (Oct. 3-4), while taking third-place at the Mark Simpson Invitational (Sept. 26-27). That following spring, Utah closed out the regular season recording a pair of third-place finishes in its final three tournaments.
Utah's five top-three finishes were a new school record and it was the most since recording four top-three performances back in 2008.
In a snow-shortened Pac-12 Championship Tournament, the Utes would register its best score in the final round of the event, but still managed to finish in 12th-place overall. Senior
Gentry Hicks registered Utah's only sub-par round in the event, shooting a 1-under (69) in the final round. Hicks would go on to tie for 37th-place overall. Meanwhile, freshman
Peyton Hastings - who played as Utah's No. 6 in the tournament - registered a top-50 finish as he tied for 47th-place in the championship.
HOLE-IN-ONE CLUB
Utah had three different players record a hole-in-one on the season. Sophomore
Nathan Wunderli became the first Ute to register a hole-in-one in a regular-season tournament since 2012 when he aced the par-3, 228-yard No. 2 hole at the Duck Invitational. Wunderli would then become the first player in school history to record two holes-in-one during the same season after registering an ace at the par-3, 204-yard No. 6 hole in the Pac-12 Championships at Boulder Country Club.
Not to be outdone, both senior
Gentry Hicks and freshman
Jordan Costello, managed to sink a hole-in-one in the first round of the Hawkeye Invitational. Hicks aced the par-3, 206-yard No. 4 hole, while Costello managed to drain his first shot at the par-3, 195-yard No. 17 hole.
AROUND THE GREEN
Utah finished the 2016-17 season posting a team scoring average of 296.5, which ranked as the program's best mark since notching a season average of 291.03 back in 2007-08. It was Utah's third-best scoring average since 2006-07.
The 296.5 averaged ranked 7.92 strokes better than its 2015-16 average (304.42) and was 6.88 strokes lower than its previous season best, which was 303.38 strokes from the 2009-10 season.
Senior
Gentry Hicks carded a team-best 72.5 scoring average on the season, which ranked third-best over the last 11 years. Newcomer
Kyler Dunkle was right behind him with a scoring average of 72.55 strokes per round, which ranked fourth highest since 2006-07.
Jordan Costello posted a 73.34 season scoring average in just his first season with the Utes, giving him the best scoring average for a freshman over the past 10 years.

QUOTABLE
"We are ready to go and ready to see what happens," said Utah head coach
Garrett Clegg. "Blake [Tomlinson] has been playing great, he had a great qualifier and has been playing fantastic this summer. I am sure that he will be excited to get his first start with the team. Tristan [Mandur] is really excited to play, as well. It will be great for these two freshmen to get out there and get going."
"The other three guys [
Mitchell Schow,
Jordan Costello and
Kyler Dunkle] played every event for us last year and are veterans to everything that is going on. I think they will be comfortable with everything and they will know what to expect with everything we have going on this coming week. Age wise, we are young. But, I think that we are young and experienced versus young and inexperienced. Our youth is our strength."
"It will be great to get out there and test ourselves. To see what we can do as a team against these schools. A lot of these teams that we will be playing against, play in this tournament every year, but for our five players it will be their first time. I expect a great week from the players. I think their minds will be right and I know that they are just chomping at the bit to get going."
UP NEXT
The Utes will be back in action again on Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 25-26, competing in the Mark Simpson Colorado Invitational, which will be held at Colorado National Golf Club in Erie, Colo.
