PROVO, Utah– The Utah women's cross country team placed 11th at the NCAA Mountain Regional Friday morning at the East Bay Golf Course. Junior
Sarah Feeny led the Utes finishing in 25th place.
"Certainly, when you look at the end result I know our group is disappointed but as their coach I am not disappointed at all," head coach
Kyle Kepler said. "We just didn't run very well the last lap and kind of ran out of gas but we were not afraid to get out, get in the race, be aggressive and test ourselves and test our mental against one of the best regions in the NCAA."
Feeny paced the Utes finishing the six-kilometer course in a time of 20:46.6. Redshirt freshman
Cara Woolnough followed in Feeny finishing in 47th place with a time of 21:14.2. Rounding out the top-5 scorers for the Utes was sophomore
Bella Williams, senior
Sadie Wassum, and freshman
Sophie Ryan. Williams finished in 56th (21:21.9), Wassum captured 77th (21:41.1), and Ryan earned 89th (21:56.7).
Also running for the Utah was freshman
Kennedy Powell who finished in 97th place with a time of 22:05.1.
"It's a tough day but this is an incredibly young group, we only loose on of our seven, and for all but one of them it was their first regional meet. Sometimes you just can't make up for experience and it's no different here," Kepler explained. "The pressure of an NCAA championship meet or regional, whatever you want to call it, is just different than anything you face all year and these guys put in a ton of effort all year and I am incredibly proud of them."
As a team, the Utes earned 11th place with a total of 294 team points. No 1 New Mexico took home the team title with a total of 41 team points. No. 4 Colorado finished in second with 53 team points and No. 9 BYU earned third with 85 team points. No. 22 Southern Utah captured 4th with 155 team points and Air Force finished in 5th with 170 team points.
"For the second straight meet these kids were running with some pretty heavy hearts and we dedicated the race to Lauren and her family and our thoughts and prayers go out to her family again," Kepler said. Our kids put it out there with everything they had and we are just really proud of the effort today."
